The Review:

The story revolves around a young girl who is the daughter of a well-known actress. In addition, there are two priests who are attempting to exorcise the demon from the young girl. The novel was adapted into a highly successful film two years later, with Peter Blatty writing and producing the screenplay, which was part of the Exorcist franchise.

This book will frighten you with its topic and the ideas it will offer you about religion, faith, and God, and why or how he allows innocent people to suffer, but you should decide for yourself while reading it.

It can be an easy read, unsettling, and vile at times, but it should not be read at night, especially before going to bed, because the images and words may form into nightmares and you may be unable to close your eyes.

One character in this book who reminded me of a TV detective Columbo was shocking, but I later realized that the book was written and published a long time ago, and this TV show came much later. Then I discovered that Peter Blatty had actually accused the show of extracting his character.

When I was four years old, I saw the movie adaptation and loved it. I watched it several times and realized that all the adults are afraid of the girl who was so funny to me and could turn her head like an owl. Later, I learned about a challenge and reward in my local cinema, which was to watch the movie alone at night in the cinema to win a large cash prize, and I asked my father to take me there, but he refused because I was too young to participate and told me about a man who died of a heart attack while trying to watch this movie.

I believe the book is scarier than the movie. While you cannot see a head turn in the book, what your mind and imagination create is far scarier than anything a movie could ever create.

Giving points or recommending this iconic novel is pointless, but I must give points for people who are unaware of what they are missing or only understand the language of numbers.

Synopsis:

“Originally published in 1971, The Exorcist is now a major television series on FOX. It remains one of the most controversial novels ever written and went on to become a literary phenomenon: It spent fifty-seven weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, seventeen consecutively at number one. Inspired by a true story of a child’s demonic possession in the 1940s, William Peter Blatty created an iconic novel that focuses on Regan, the eleven-year-old daughter of a movie actress residing in Washington, D.C. A small group of overwhelmed yet determined individuals must rescue Regan from her unspeakable fate, and the drama that ensues is gripping and unfailingly terrifying.

Two years after its publication, The Exorcist was, of course, turned into a wildly popular motion picture, garnering ten Academy Award nominations. On opening day of the film, lines of the novel’s fans stretched around city blocks. In Chicago, frustrated moviegoers used a battering ram to gain entry through the double side doors of a theater. In Kansas City, police used tear gas to disperse an impatient crowd who tried to force their way into a cinema. The three major television networks carried footage of these events; CBS’s Walter Cronkite devoted almost ten minutes to the story. The Exorcist was, and is, more than just a novel and a film: it is a true landmark.

Purposefully raw and profane, The Exorcist still has the extraordinary ability to disturb readers and cause them to forget that it is “just a story.” Published here in this beautiful fortieth anniversary edition, it remains an unforgettable reading experience and will continue to shock and frighten a new generation of readers.”

The Review:

Overall, it was a decent read. A solid narrative, fascinating characters, an engaging read, and an unusually gratifying finish for the King. Overall, not particularly innovative, relying on the old themes of roaming/roving bands of "shining" vampires and the master-apprentice connection, but it's still a lot of fun.

I was busy during the days it was released and was both surprised and delighted to learn of its existence. I have yet to see the movie adaptation, so I can't say whether it is good or not, but I will soon, so keep an eye on this section of the blog or leave a comment if you have.

This work, like The Shining, may be read as a stand-alone, although I recommend reading The Shining first. It really doesn't matter except to become acquainted with some backstories and characters.

Remember that it is not as legendary or memorable as its predecessor, The Shining, but it is still a wonderful narrative with vampires added to the mix of spirits and more individuals with the gift of Shining.

I enjoyed the continuation of the main story several years later when the main character has grown up. I'd always been curious about what happened to him after the hotel events and how he used his Shining abilities. This book provided me with all of the answers to my questions.

This book cannot be compared to the original first part; still, it deserves full marks on its own, but some readers may disagree with me, and the reason for this is the disappointment they may feel if they enter this book expecting another shining with horror elements and a scary story. I refer to it as an expanded and watered-down universe of that book.

Synopsis:

“Now a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor!

From master storyteller Stephen King, his unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining—an instant #1 New York Times bestseller that is “[a] vivid frightscape” (The New York Times).

Years ago, the haunting of the Overlook Hotel nearly broke young Dan Torrance’s sanity, as his paranormal gift known as “the shining” opened a door straight into hell. And even though Dan is all grown up, the ghosts of the Overlook—and his father’s legacy of alcoholism and violence—kept him drifting aimlessly for most of his life. Now, Dan has finally found some order in the chaos by working in a local hospice, earning the nickname “Doctor Sleep” by secretly using his special abilities to comfort the dying and prepare them for the afterlife. But when he unexpectedly meets twelve-year-old Abra Stone—who possesses an even more powerful manifestation of the shining—the two find their lives in sudden jeopardy at the hands of the ageless and murderous nomadic tribe known as the True Knot, reigniting Dan’s own demons and summoning him to battle for this young girl’s soul and survival...”

The Review:

The novel's title, "The Shining," refers to a set of psychic abilities held by one of the main characters. I saw the movie when I was five years old, and it made a lasting impression on me, especially the conclusion, which was incredible for me. I wasn't frightened, but I was proud of the child who was so brave to accomplish what he did because I assumed he was my age, and it inspired me to be strong and brave as well.

If you are a horror fan who has only seen the movie but has never read the book, you should read it and consider it a great gift to yourself because it will take you inside one crazy dark brain and its thoughts that you will never see on the screen.

A masterpiece for horror fans from the master and king of horror. While reading the book, you will notice that the characters are extremely complicated. They all have a genuine vibe to them. You sympathize with a character, a man who can't seem to catch a break, at one point. The next thing you know, you're terrified of him and what he might do to his family. His wife is also far more complex than she appears. You become fascinated with her while also fearful for her safety.

This is a creepy novel that isn't just popular because it was written by the king or because it's one of those fashion statement items that everyone wants to be associated with just to fit in. Instead, this book will send your brain into the creep zone and truly scare you.

Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.”
