Called Out of Darkness Summary

The Review:

In Called Out of Darkness, Anne Rice walks us through her life, from her childhood in an intellectual New Orleans family where she developed a deep love of her beautiful Catholic Church, to moving to Texas and California, where she and her new poet husband rejected all religion and lived on the outskirts of the San Francisco hippy movement, to her surprisingly hugely successful career writing books about witches and vampires (I read all of these, she sold 100 million of them). Finally, she brilliantly portrays her sorrowful return to the Jesus she still loved but couldn't believe in, as well as to the Church of her upbringing.

"Honesty" is the term that comes to me when I think of the book. Her concluding articulation of what it means to fully follow Jesus and how tough it is to just love rather than obey man-made laws moved me deeply. I enjoy reading biographies and would give this one a thousand points if I could.

I'm at a loss for words to explain how much I like and respect the transparency and honesty shown here. I know a lot of individuals who are becoming more informed and open-minded about Church politics and just loving Christ who have had some of the same experiences here.

In the middle of all this turmoil, they walk out of the Church doors, and in doing so, they walk out on Christ. In a gloomy and seemingly hopeless catacomb, Anne Rice is a bright lamp.

She expresses her pain as well as her blessings, and most importantly, she teaches the Love of Christ, emphasizing the need of loving, forgiving, and not judging people, including our family, friends, neighbors, and even adversaries.

She demonstrates how to be guided out of the shadows. I am eternally grateful to Anne Rice for her beautiful stories, and I must thank her once more for this wonderful work.

This is the book for anybody who has ever wondered what happened to Anne Rice and why she quit writing vampire novels around the time this book was published. It's not a tough book to read, yet it's quite intimate.

This novel reads quite amateurishly. However, it is simply the author's thoughts flowing directly into the pages, which gives it a stronger feeling of its own unique personality.

You have the impression that a friend has just informed you that she has regained her religion. It's not flowery or overly ornamented, and it's quite down to earth. I also appreciate seeing individuals tie their faith to their daily life, so I found that to be interesting to read.

Even if you've never read Anne Rice's works, you can tell she was a superb writer based on the popularity and reviews of her books. Because of the darkness and vampire subject matter, I read any and all of her work because I enjoy reading these kinds of books when they are written well and by an author like her.

I came upon her more recent works about the life of Christ and warily read her article at the conclusion of Christ the Lord out of Egypt about how she studies for her books.

I felt good reading what she had to say about Christ's life since it was so eloquently written. As soon as I finished the first book, I went on to read the sequel Christ the Lord the Road to Cana, and then I came upon her Called Out of Darkness A Spiritual Confession.

Incredible! A truly remarkable account of a remarkable spiritual journey, and as a non-Catholic, it answered many of my questions about the Catholic Church simply because I want to learn more about all of the major religions because I believe they are all essentially one religion with many branches or versions of the same story.

Each of these three books has had a spiritual impact on me, and I frequently suggest them. Anne Rice is one of my top ten authors, and she may be the finest. Her writing is engrossing, enthralling, graphic, thought-provoking, and not at all monotonous!

Careful readers, it appears to me, strive to comprehend the metaphors at work in her novels and delve deeper into the volume's content. There's no need to hunt for metaphors in this totally unusual reading experience since she talks so honestly and invitingly.

It's practically irrelevant if one can relate with her individual experience or revelation about God within the context of the Catholic experience. In these days of high tension, numerous wars, political correctness, random killings, broken marriages, and so on, it is both invigorating and challenging to read about another's search for the deepest meanings in a happy existence.

It all starts with her background in New Orleans, where she grew up in a neighborhood where everyone she knew or encountered was a devout Catholic.

Author was so committed to religion that she determined as a child that she wanted to be a Catholic priest. She went to Catholic schools, went to church several times a week, and was so eager to devote her life to the Church that she would not even consider becoming a nun and was shocked to learn that becoming a Catholic priest would be impossible.

Called Out of Darkness is a remarkable memoir in which the author shares intimate details about her upbringing, including the tragedy of her alcoholic mother, her enormous difficulties in learning to read effectively, her marriage, the deaths of her young daughter and husband, and her deep love for the city of New Orleans and its architecture.

Anne Rice has had a fascinating existence, one that most of her long-time followers have only had a passing knowledge of.

This biography shows how she went from writing novels about vampires and witches to creating fiction committed to portraying the story of Christianity, a change that surprised her readers (Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt, Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana and Angel Time: The Song of the Seraphim, Book 1).

Fans of Anne Rice's novels will like her memoir, but her narrative is so unique that even those who haven't read her books will be intrigued by what she has to say.

Final Thoughts:

This is a fantastic book about a fantastic author who shocked the world when she returned to her Christian faith, then shocked the world again in July 2010 when she said she couldn't stay in a group of people who were disputatious, homophobic, and believed they were the only ones going to heaven while secretly relishing the thought that everyone else was going to hell. Although she still believes in Jesus, she refuses to call herself a "Christian!"

I'm always happy to state that I've read all of Anne Rice's books. This is just because she's so incredibly talented, and I'm drawn to the realm of myth and vampires.

I chose to read this because I wanted to read a book by someone who has gone through multiple pathways of religion, someone who has wandered but not lost, and most importantly she is Anne Rice, who writes amazing books.

This was a fantastic book to read. I would suggest it to everyone, whether they are a protestant, a Catholic, an agnostic, or an atheist.

Synopsis:

Anne Rice’s first work of nonfiction—a powerful and haunting memoir that explores her continuing spiritual transformation

Anne Rice was raised in New Orleans as the devout child in a deeply religious Irish Catholic family. Here, she describes how, as she grew up, she lost her belief in God, but not her desire for a meaningful life. She used her novels—beginning with Interview with a Vampire—to wrestle with otherworldly themes while in her own life, she experienced both loss (the death of her daughter and, later, her beloved husband, Stan Rice) and joys (the birth of her son, Christopher). And she writes about how, finally, after years of questioning, she experienced the intense conversion and re-embracing of her faith that lie behind her most recent novels about the life of Christ.”

The Review:

The novel is as ostentatious and self-centered as the title implies. Eggers is a twenty-something who is not only trying to make his own place in life but also dealing with mortality and raising his younger brother. It may be viewed as a coming-of-age story in which the narrator must learn to live with the death of his parents. Perhaps it's a novel about death in which the living are introduced as supporting characters. In any case, the book is genuinely brilliant.

There are acknowledgment pages before even getting to the opening page of the work. These are multiple pages of small print ravings that make up the acknowledgment section. You are more than welcome to skip this portion, according to Eggers. I highly encourage you to refrain from doing so. It's lengthy, but it's also amusing, and it sets the tone for the remainder of the work.

I was already aware that this book seemed to elicit powerful emotions before I ever opened it. Some individuals despise it, while others adore it. The way you react to Eggers' writing will determine how you respond to this book. You'll love this book if you like his stream-of-consciousness, crazily extraneous, always-on-the-verge-of-a-panic-attack style of narration. If you're looking for a simple, linear story, this is the worst book you'll ever read.

A touching and amusing memoir. The writing is unique and casual. The personal story Eggers shares is painful, yet he conveys it without being self-pitying. The tales told by Eggers are vivid and often funny. This is an excellent book, and his other works are also worth reading. But what I am saying about this book is from my point of view as I mentioned earlier that this book is not for everyone.

One of the reasons I enjoyed this book so much was that I treated it as if it were a novel about a fictional character rather than a real person. It was quite helpful in understanding the sarcasm, hatred, rage, and energy that this novel exudes. Another thing that touched me was the author's resolve and love for his young brother, despite the fact that he was still a student at the time of his parent's death.

This is one of those books that divide readers as to whether they should hate it or love it, and I am one of those who liked it. Let's see what everyone else thinks, so once you've finished the book, please leave a remark or message with your comments.

Final Thoughts:

A beautiful and heartbreaking biography but not for everyone and that is the only reason to give it low points and recommendations.

I was astounded by the author's decision to write this book at a period when he was neither renowned nor well-known, and yet he produced a biography about himself. Call it pride or whatever you want, but he succeeded in writing a masterpiece that became a best-selling novel and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction.

It is one of the very few books that were able to make me laugh out loud.
It's also unusual. You will probably despise this work if you are seeking for a more traditional narrative structure or a more mature and lovable main character. You will probably enjoy this book as much as I do if you are searching for something that pushes the boundaries, looks at novel writing as an art form and isn't afraid to reveal the world in all its brutal reality.

Synopsis:

“"Exhilarating…Profoundly moving, occasionally angry, and often hilarious...A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is, finally, a finite book of jest, which is why it succeeds so brilliantly" (The New York Times Book Review).

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is the unique, moving memoir of a college senior who, in the space of five weeks, loses both of his parents to cancer and inherits his eight-year-old brother. In his distinctive style unlike any other memoir, Egger's story is an exhilarating debut that manages to be simultaneously hilarious and wildly inventive, as well as a deeply heartfelt story of the love that holds a family together.”

Yours Cruelly, Elvira

Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark

Published: 21, September 2021

Author: Cassandra Peterson

Genres: Arts, Comedy, Fantasy, Horror, Humor, Movies & Video, Photography, Science Fiction, Television

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the undisputed Queen of Halloween, reveals her entire story, complete with intimate bombshells, as told by the bombshell herself.

This is one of the best celebrity memoirs of all time, and it's about the woman who played Elvira, one of my favorite female characters, and she's only second to Morticia Addams as my favorite female character ever.

I loved the character she played but I had no idea about her writing skills and that is what blew me away. She is brilliant and she has many stories to tell. I was smiling and sometimes I was serious but overall I felt joy and happiness. Pages just moved between my fingers and the book was finished as if it was just a booklet even though it has almost four hundred pages and then I read it again in just two days. After that I watched some footage of Elvira to satisfy the urge to see her again and re-live the beautiful moments, I even watched her interviews on YouTube.

The writing style is as if you are sitting with the author in the same room and she is telling you about her life and she is really open about everything same as Elvira. So get ready for an amazing time with a person who is like an open book when it comes to her life and anyone who is involved in it.

You are going to find a lot of surprises and read about many megastars that had interaction with the author, some of this is going to shock you and make you see the smoke and mirrors of the place called Hollywood.

The audio of this book is amazing because it is narrated by Cassandra Peterson herself and that makes it even better. I recommend getting the audio with the book if you still don’t have the audible account because you can get the audio version for free with the free audible trial.

Synopsis:

“The woman behind the icon known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the undisputed Queen of Halloween, reveals her full story, filled with intimate bombshells, told by the bombshell herself.

On Good Friday in 1953, at only 18 months old, 25 miles from the nearest hospital in Manhattan, Kansas, Cassandra Peterson reached for a pot on the stove and doused herself in boiling water. Third-degree burns covered 35% of her body, and the prognosis wasn't good. But she survived. Burned and scarred, the impact stayed with her and became an obstacle she was determined to overcome. Feeling like a misfit led to her love of horror. While her sisters played with Barbie dolls, Cassandra built model kits of Frankenstein and Dracula, and idolized Vincent Price.

Due to a complicated relationship with her mother, Cassandra left home at 14, and by age 17 she was performing at the famed Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas. Run-ins with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Tom Jones helped her grow up fast. Then a chance encounter with her idol Elvis Presley, changed the course of her life forever, and led her to Europe where she worked in film and traveled Italy as lead singer of an Italian pop band. She eventually made her way to Los Angeles, where she joined the famed comedy improv group, The Groundlings, and worked alongside Phil Hartman and Paul "Pee-wee" Reubens, honing her comedic skills.

Nearing age 30, a struggling actress considered past her prime, she auditioned at local LA channel KHJ as hostess for the late night vintage horror movies. Cassandra improvised, made the role her own, and got the job on the spot. Yours Cruelly, Elvira is an unforgettably wild memoir. Cassandra doesn't shy away from revealing exactly who she is and how she overcame seemingly insurmountable odds. Always original and sometimes outrageous, her story is loaded with twists, travails, revelry, and downright shocking experiences. It is the candid, often funny, and sometimes heart-breaking tale of a Midwest farm girl's long strange trip to become the world's sexiest, sassiest Halloween icon.”

Based on a True Story: Not a Memoir

Published: 20, September 2016

Author: Norm Macdonald

Genres: Actor & Entertainer Biographies, Biographies of Actors & Actresses, Biographies of Comedians, Celebrity & Popular Culture Humor, Comedy, Humor Essays

This book is going to make you laugh and cackle like a crazy person. A very funny read that makes it clear that late Norm Macdonald was a very talented person. He died a few days ago and it made me remember all the laughs he gave me through his shows. He had his own style and that is what made him so unique in all the things he did and one of those things was his writing that you can enjoy in this book.

The book is as its name suggests, you can’t be sure of what is true and what is not if the author is really telling about something from his life or is he joking; basically, a mixture of fact, fantasy, and fiction are used to create magic that makes the reader laugh out loud, so be careful where and when you read this book.

I was not a fan of audiobooks but to save time I started listening to audio versions of the books. Some are kind of okay but if the author is the narrator then it changes everything especially if the narrator and author is someone like Norm Macdonald. I recommend the audio of this book to all the fans and anyone who loves humor in general. You’ll know why I recommended this audio once you listen to Norm Macdonald deliver a joke, he has his unique style of telling jokes and even if some jokes were old, they still felt funny and made me laugh, it was just the magic of his style.

Starting was a bit slow but just a small portion and after that, it gets pretty interesting. I must remind the readers about the author, he is not your typical celebrity so don’t expect a typical memoir. Only his name has “Norm” in it and normal stops at “m” when it comes to this guy.

A great read for the fans and everyone who loves to read funny stuff. He is no more but we can still appreciate this underappreciated comic genius by reading his book and watching his shows.

Synopsis:

“NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Driving, wild and hilarious” (The Washington Post), here is the incredible “memoir” of the legendary actor, gambler, raconteur, and Saturday Night Live veteran.

When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

Greenlights

Published: 20, October 2020

Author: Matthew McConaughey

Genres: Memoir, philosophy, poetry, Biographies, Religion & Spirituality, Men's, Self-Help

This is the first book written by the already famous and established artist Matthew McConaughey and it is not just for his fans. I think everyone needs to read this because it is a mash-up of many things and styles, he tells us about his life, his stories, his views and basically it is a man’s story that every man must-read. The reader is going to get a lot of lessons about life from this adventure that is an actual life story of the author.

For a long time I never even noticed who is the man on the cover of this book and what it is all about because I thought it is some politician and never read the name of the book and author until I was told by a friend to check this book.

I loved the adventurous life story about a man and his dog that was traveling and going on expeditions instead of living like other Hollywood celebrities. I think he is very open and admits a lot of stuff that many may never even talk about.

I know some people may hate it to the point of not even finishing it because of the way the author told the truth about his childhood and the things he was taught to do, I am a very open-minded person and I can understand that but some people don’t get it, because they never lived a life like that, so only hate it if you never lied, cheated or did nothing wrong in your life or your parents never fought. I think I already gave some points from the book by discussing this matter so no more spoilers.

I loved the audio version a lot because it was narrated by the author himself and you are going to love it also. I am sharing the link to Audible and if you are a new member, you can get the audio of this book for free with a free one-month trial of audible.

Synopsis:
“#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Over two million copies sold! From the Academy Award®–winning actor, an unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom, and lessons learned the hard way about living with greater satisfaction

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE GUARDIAN

“Unflinchingly honest and remarkably candid, Matthew McConaughey’s book invites us to grapple with the lessons of his life as he did—and to see that the point was never to win, but to understand.”—Mark Manson, author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me.

Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries. I found stories I experienced, lessons I learned and forgot, poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs about what matters, some great photographs, and a whole bunch of bumper stickers. I found a reliable theme, an approach to living that gave me more satisfaction, at the time, and still: If you know how, and when, to deal with life’s challenges—how to get relative with the inevitable—you can enjoy a state of success I call “catching greenlights.”

So I took a one-way ticket to the desert and wrote this book: an album, a record, a story of my life so far. This is fifty years of my sights and seens, felts and figured-outs, cools and shamefuls. Graces, truths, and beauties of brutality. Getting away withs, getting caughts, and getting wets while trying to dance between the raindrops.

Hopefully, it’s medicine that tastes good, a couple of aspirin instead of the infirmary, a spaceship to Mars without needing your pilot’s license, going to church without having to be born again, and laughing through the tears.

It’s a love letter. To life.

It’s also a guide to catching more greenlights—and to realizing that the yellows and reds eventually turn green too.

Good luck.”

Have A Nice Day

A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks

Published: 31, October 1999
Author: Mick Foley
Genres: Wrestler Biographies, Comedy, Autobiography

Today I was not planning to review this book but changed my mind because the book I was originally planning to review is a bit dry and may take a little longer; by the way, that book is written by a writer called George R.R. Martin and I’ll post that review next.

Mick Foley was a wrestler and if you don’t know him then you missed a legend in action. He was one of the toughest hardcore wrestlers ever and broke many bones (his own) and took many falls even it is entertainment but still it hurts when you fall from two-story buildings or from an equally high cage. He bled, got burned, wrestled in a ring surrounded by barbed wire instead of a rope, got beaten by bat with barbed wire attached on it, and even lost an ear during one of these matches, I think he lost his tooth in the ring also but can’t recall that at the moment. (I’ll update as soon as I get the true info)

He actually wrote this book and as people may think, he never used a ghostwriter like what normally happens with these kinds of autobiographies.

It is the true life story of this legend written while on the move from city to city and from state to state. He wrote all of this by hand because he claims his typewriter was broken. This book is huge and has more than seven hundred pages with pictures from his real life and the ring. You feel like being on a funny and frugal life trip with him while reading this amazingly written full of wit and full of life experiences. I finished this book in three days even with all the other stuff I am usually doing because I was not able to stop reading and every time I had to do something, this book was at the back of my mind.

One more book like this is the story of Stone Cold Steve Austin. It was an amazing story also but I am not sure if Mr. Austin wrote it himself. But it doesn’t matter because it was as good as this one and I am surely going to review it soon because he was my brother’s favorite wrestler.

Back to this book… Mr. Foley had so many personas and you are going to love reading about how he created these personas and backstories of why some personas were named. I am not using any names just in case a reader is new to this and wants to enjoy the book without any spoilers. I think it is better to read this book as a story of a guy who wants to be a great wrestler and see what happens to him from the start to his legendary and iconic status.

Did he win any championship? Why don’t you read and find out… I believe some wrestlers are not the champions, because they are the champion makers and even I am not telling you if he became a champion or not but he surely was a champion maker. Like other legends, Undertaker and Kane were two icons but they were champion makers even though they were above champion level. The same goes for Mick Foley.

A real page-turner that is not going to disappoint you even if you are not a wrestling fan. One of the best autobiographies out there that showcased the hidden talent of Mick Foley that no one knew about before he wrote this book. This book is the one that started the trend of autobiographies of wrestlers.

Synopsis:
“Mick Foley is a nice man, a family man who loves amusement parks and eating ice cream in bed. So how to explain those Japanese death matches in rings with explosives, golden thumbtacks, and barbed wire instead of rope? The second-degree burn tissue? And the missing ear that was ripped off during a bout-in which he kept fighting? Here is an intimate glimpse into Mick Foley's mind, his history, his work, and what some might call his pathology. Now with a bonus chapter summarizing the past 15 months-from his experience as a bestselling author through his parting thoughts before his final match. A tale of blood, sweat, tears and more blood-all in his own words-straight from the twisted genius behind Cactus Jack, Dude Love, and Mankind.”

Friday The 13th

Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th
Published: 2006
Author: Peter M. Bracke
Genres: History, Criticism, Horror, Movie Guides, Fantasy, Video Reference, TV & Movie Tie-In, Biography

One of my favorite combinations of day and date is coming and it means time to review a book related to “Friday The 13” and a bit about the movies with the same name.

One of my all-time favorite Characters is Jason Voorhees who needs no introduction if you are a fan of horror/slasher movies. I watched all these movies and bought all the comics, magazines, books, and even comedy if I saw Jason’s famous hockey mask on the cover. You can find many copies and copycats of Jason but he is always going to be the number one slasher.

Crystal Lake Memories is a visual memoir of these movies. Illustrated with nearly 600 photos, archives, and production materials. An amazing read if you are a fan of the series and it can be a great companion for the movie series collection that I mentioned near the end of this review or you can directly check it here. https://amzn.to/3jRI2i6

The hardcover version’s dimensions are as follows 9.5 x 1.11 x 12.4 inches and it is a treasure trove of behind the scenes info and tells the reader about how all and movies were made with all the detail and trivia, full of never before seen photos and interviews with the cast members. You can read this book and then watch the movies again to see missing things and find special places and parts that you never realized before.

After reading the book you gain an even greater appreciation of one of the greatest horror movie franchises in history while watching it again. If you are a fan of this franchise then I don’t have to tell you much about this part of the book.

This book is not just a story of this franchise. You are going to learn a lot about the cinema industry and how they can ruin a good franchise or a movie even before it is released or sometimes not even finished filming. Show business is not what people think of it and you may find many insights about this topic here.

This book is in my opinion the granddaddy of prison escape books and movies. The story spans more than fourteen years and is about a guy who was wrongfully accused of a murder he never committed. This book was an immediate success and became a bestseller instantly, achieving widespread fame, and is considered a classic. It was the number one bestseller for twenty-one weeks in France alone, with more than 1.5 million copies sold in France alone. Two hundred thirty-nine editions of the book have since been published worldwide, in twenty-one different languages at the time of writing this review. (28/08/2021)

I bought this book just because I had the offer to buy any book for twenty-five percent price and I was looking for a huge book so I can get the most out of this deal and luckily I found this book. I am glad I choose this and when I started reading this book, I forgot about the time but even with the way it is written, I felt the time stop whenever I was reading about “Papi” pacing in his prison cell. It was hard to read at times when you realize a person was a prisoner for life and had to count every second of it, especially when he was innocent. I actually felt like being with him in the cell when he was in for solidarity. And again with him whenever he was spinning plan after plan for escape. This book and “Papi” are going to teach you so much about life that you can never learn in a free life. It’s about the freedom that we never even notice and just live our lives without appreciating the beauty and happiness around us.

Clearly one of the best reads I ever had. A classic.
The story is all about courage and the will to fight and never giving up in any situation. I learned a lot from this book and it helped me become a better version of myself.

Papi did something in one part that I was not happy about. Without spoiling anything, it is about two sisters. You’ll know what I am talking about when you read the book. Other than that I loved the book.

Synopsis:
“Henri Charrière, nicknamed "Papillon," for the butterfly tattoo on his chest, was convicted in Paris in 1931 of a murder he did not commit. Sentenced to life imprisonment in the penal colony of French Guiana, he became obsessed with one goal: escape. After planning and executing a series of treacherous yet failed attempts over many years, he was eventually sent to the notorious prison, Devil's Island, a place from which no one had ever escaped . . . until Papillon. His flight to freedom remains one of the most incredible feats of human cunning, will, and endurance ever undertaken.

Charrière's astonishing autobiography, Papillon, was first published in France to instant acclaim in 1968, more than twenty years after his final escape. Since then, it has become a treasured classic--the gripping, shocking, ultimately uplifting odyssey of an innocent man who would not be defeated.”
