The last review I did was of the book called “Jaws of Darkness” and while writing I remembered this classic book of natural horror by Mr. Peter Benchley.
My main plan was to write the review of “BEAST,” another great book by the same writer but I changed my mind and am going to review this book first because it is a true classic, and what better way to introduce Mr. Peter Benchley.
I was around four years old and my brother was two and a half, but we were intelligent kids and knew what is happening around us. My uncle asked us if we want to go watch a movie with him and we said yes. For me, it was one of the greatest sea adventures ever but for my brother, it was a lifelong trauma, aquaphobia, and galeophobia. Until today he can’t go in the water, not even a two feet deep swimming pool and he can't sit in a bathtub either. And if he sees a shark on television; that night he gets nightmares and he can’t breathe properly…you get the idea of how scary that movie was for him? It was an adaptation of the book called “JAWS.”
Update on my brother’s condition: Later my brother devised a great way of watching these kinds of movies; he watched all the “JAWS” parts and almost all movies with sharks in them with closed eyes.
The book grabs you from your legs as soon as you open the book, just like the shark does and doesn't let you go until the last page, and even then you are holding on to the book and thinking is it really dead. The book sheds light on some things you can't get in a movie and subplots that were completely removed to focus entirely on the shark plus something’s are different in the book with missing stories and character traits and in some cases the reasons for why someone did something in the movie was not mentioned, but in the book, you can read about all of it, so if you only watched the movie and never read this book, then you must read it and re-live the horror, suspense, and the terror that this book brings. The only thing that is missing in this book is the iconic background music by the great John Williams.
FACT: Peter Benchley was inspired by a shark being captured in Montauk, New York.
Synopsis:
“It was just another day in the life of a small Atlantic resort until the terror from the deep came to prey on unwary holiday makers. The first sign of trouble – a warning of what was to come – took the form of a young woman's body, or what was left of it, washed up on the long, white stretch of beach . . .
A summer of terror has begun . . .”
Warning: Do not read this book at the beach or near a swimming pool.
It may get boring for the people who want action on every page. Keep in mind it is way longer and explains a lot more than the movie that was made out of this novel.
Rating: 100/100
Recommended: 100/100 YES.
