The Odd Sisters

A Villains Novel
Book 6 of 8: Villains
Published: 2, July 2019

Genres: Teen & Young Adult Media Tie-In, Teen & Young Adult Fairy Tale & Folklore Adaptations, Children's Folk Tales & Myths, Teen & Young Adult Myths & Legends, Wizards & Witches Fantasy, Epic Fantasy

The first thing that I immediately loved about this book was the maps of the kingdoms from these books and the artwork. It kind of gives the reader a sense of how a character looks like and a sense of reality and awareness when you see the maps. I am not sure if all the copies are the same as mine, I mean contain the maps and art or not but if you don’t have then basically it doesn’t matter and these won’t make the story any different than what it is. Besides you can imagine the places and characters in your mind as with any other book you read.

This book is a fast read and I was able to finish it in a couple of hours and was left wanting for more as with lots of good series like this one.

Lots of people are not happy with this book because once more they didn’t read the previous books and this time this story is kind of all about the new characters that are not actually in the movies. I liked the idea because you are not just bound to read about the few characters and villains that you already know. I am hoping that Disney is going to expand the animated universe and include the characters of this series as well.

After the ending of the fifth book, I was crazily waiting for this book and I was not disappointed to know what happens and as always it is all going to be a spoiler if I talk about any of the books because I know some people reading this review are first-time readers and may get a hint of what happens and may not like it if I ruin the story, suspense, and excitement for them.

The story expands even more and you know about one of the main evils behind lots of stuff that is happening. The mash-up of characters is my favorite thing in any media, especially games, comics, and books, and as with the review of the fifth book of this series "Mother Knows Best," I must remind you about the game Kingdom Hearts, this book series reminds me of that game series a lot and I must mention it so I can invite you to that huge and beautiful universe also. (Link to the game at the bottom with book links)

I must inform you about the audio version of this book here. It is amazing and I am sure you are going to love the voice actor and the way she is telling the story. It is true, I get a commission if you buy the audio but I only say it if I like the audio myself and you must go and check the sample from the link at the bottom to hear it for yourself and understand that I am telling the truth about the audio version of this book.

This paragraph is going to be the same for this book series so If you already read it previously then just skip to the next paragraph - This book series is about Walt Disney’s villains and about the life they had and what caused them to be like what you saw them on the screen. I always wanted to know about the other side of the story when I saw a villain do something evil. And I think now is the time when we can see and read about that because I see movies and read books about antiheroes and even villain’s backgrounds. Our society is at last evolving and adopting the open-minded approach and that is why we are trying to learn the opposite side’s story also.

Synopsis:
“Throughout the Villains series, the Odd Sisters have meddled in the lives of the Wicked Queen, The Beast, Ursula, Maleficent, and Mother Gothel, changing the course of fate for the greatest villains ever known. Now, it’s time for their reckoning.

This latest novel by the author of the wildly popular Villains series goes deeper into the lives of the twisted, diabolical Odd Sisters, finally revealing the dark truth about who they are and where they're from. The Odd Sisters will appeal to fans who can’t get enough of the mischievous sisters, as well as draw new readers to Serena Valentino’s darkly fascinating take on the Disney Villains.”

I suggest buying the hardcover version if you are a true fan or want to give it as a gift to someone who is a fan.

Mother Knows Best

A Tale of the Old Witch
Book 5 of 8: Villains
Published: 7, August 2018

Genres: Teen & Young Adult Media Tie-In, Teen & Young Adult Fairy Tale & Folklore Adaptations, Children's Folk Tales & Myths, Teen & Young Adult Myths & Legends, Wizards & Witches Fantasy

Evil is made, not born, is the best way to describe lots of these villains and the stories involved in this series and that is why we are reading this series so we can learn what caused these people to change into what we saw on the screen. But don’t forget, this book is not just about the villain, it is about the main series and what is happening in the universe of these characters.

This book has one of the most complete stories of any violins out of all the previous books in this series and even she was already kind of in a dark environment and you can tell she just needs a little tap on the shoulder to turn full dark and evil but still, you want to read on to see how it actually happened.

What I liked about the author is that she knows what she is writing and knows all the characters and movies from the universe she is writing about.

I love books because you can actually read what a character is thinking but in the movie, you can’t see that and it becomes only a two-dimensional character instead of a multidirectional one, where you can read thoughts, dreams, motivations, feelings, pain, and a lot more.

The author is building a huge universe that is getting bigger with every book and that you must find out and explore for yourself. If you know anything about the game called “Kingdom Hearts” then you’ll understand what I am talking about. It is basically a mash-up of all the Disney movies, live and animated combined into one huge game and in this case the book series. I wanted to talk about this theory in the last review but now I am sure of it so I mentioned it here. If you never played that game series then try and you are surely going to love it. I’ll add the link at the end with book links.

Disney’s Tangled was the classic tale of Rapunzel retold with a heavy Disney touch, and it is one of my favorite animated movies, but not because of the story or anything related to the humans, it was the warhorse that stole the show for me.

Warning: As with all the other books before this one, do not read it unless you read the previous books or you may get confused about what is happening because you need to know the backstories to understand the progression of the story.

Synopsis:
“Evil is made not born.
Book 5 in the wildly popular Villains series.

The tale of the legendary golden flower is widely known. The story has been told many times and in many ways. But always the flower is coveted by an old witch to keep herself young and beautiful. And always the flower is used to save a dying queen, who then gives birth to a princess with magical hair. Not willing to lose the flower, the old witch steals the princess and locks her away in a high tower, raising her as her own. But the princess always finds out who she truly is and manages to defeat the old witch.

And yet this is only half the story. So what of the old witch, Mother Gothel? Where does she come from? And how does she come across the magical golden flower? Here is one account that recounts a version of the story that has remained untold for centuries . . . until now. It is a tale of mothers and daughters, of youth and dark magic. It is a tale of the old witch.”

At last a book in this series that I can give full points without worrying about getting any blame. If you don’t like this book then it means you simply don’t like this genre or you didn’t read my warnings and suggestions about not reading this book unless you read the series in sequence.

I suggest buying the hardcover version if you are a true fan or want to give it as a gift to someone who is a fan.

Mistress of All Evil

A Tale of the Dark Fairy

Book 4 of 8: Villains
Published: 3, October 2017
Genres: Teen & Young Adult Media Tie-In, Teen & Young Adult Fairy Tale & Folklore Adaptations, Children's Folk Tales & Myths, Teen & Young Adult Myths & Legends

Warning: This book is not a standalone book like the three books before this one. Do not read this book unless you already read at least the second and the third books in sequence, otherwise, lots of stuff is not going to make sense. The way the covers of these books are, they feel like stand-alone books, but a lot of stuff is going on behind the main story and what you saw in movies. You are indeed going to read about the villains of these movies and what caused them to be that way but you need to understand that these books introduced new characters and these characters are a big part of this series.

I am not sure if this story is connected to the movie “Maleficent” because I didn’t watch it until now, so I can’t tell anything about that (will update as soon as I am able to watch the movie.)

Some twists are waiting for you and it is not just about the villains of Disney, you’ll find some backstories and stuff about the characters that you thought were good and helpful. The problem with some books is that you can’t review properly due to the issue with spoilers and I really don’t like to give anything away because I don’t like to read or know any spoilers either. Just know you are going to get confused and shocked at the same time but the main story is unfolding as we progress through the books and you’ll know a lot more in the next book so don’t skip this book or you’ll miss a lot of good stuff and main plot progression.

The writer is expanding on this universe by adding new characters and bringing a few hidden or unknown characters to the front and telling us the background of things that we just see in movies and sometimes think why this happened or why this fairy or villain did what they did.

The fairy academy is a nice concept and it opens up a lot of new story arcs if the writer wants and readers love it. But that is all I am going to tell you about the fairy academy.

A good read that is not as long as I wanted it to be but still it is a proper storybook that is going to take more than a few hours to finish.

Synopsis:
“The tale is told as if it’s happening once upon a dream: the lovely maiden meets her handsome prince in the woods.

The story has been told many times and in many ways. But always the maiden finds out that she is a princess―a princess who has been cursed by a dark fairy to prick her finger on a spindle and fall into an eternal sleep. Though her three good fairies try to protect her, the princess succumbs to the curse. But the power of good endures, as her true love defeats the fire-breathing dragon and awakens the princess with true love’s first kiss. The two live happily ever after.

And yet this is only half the story. So what of the dark fairy, Maleficent? Why does she curse the innocent princess? What led to her becoming so filled with malice, anger, and hatred? Many tales have tried to explain her motives. Here is one account, pulled down from the many passed down through the ages. It is a tale of love and betrayal, of magic and reveries. It is a tale of the Mistress of All Evil.”

I suggest buying the hardcover version if you are a true fan or want to give it as a gift to someone who is a fan.

Poor Unfortunate Soul

A Tale of the Sea Witch

Book 3 of 8: Villains
Published: 1, January 2016
Genres: Teen & Young Adult Media Tie-In, Teen & Young Adult Fairy Tale & Folklore Adaptations, Children's Folk Tales & Myths, Teen & Young Adult Myths & Legends, Disney

Warning: Do not read this book unless you already read at least the second book of the series, otherwise lots of stuff is not going to make sense and you’ll blame me for recommending this book.

As you can see from the cover, this book is about Ursula but you are going to find more about the witches that were in the second book and a few more characters like the girl who was supposed to marry the prince before he transformed into the beast. The book has really bad reviews but the problem is that these people didn’t read the first two books and that is why they feel like that. Don’t worry about the bad reviews and don’t expect too much either. It is a simple and fast read and just think of it as an introductory and character development phase book for the characters you are reading about; many are new or background characters that we never even noticed in main stories and movies. Once more I am warning the readers to read the first two books before reading this one.

This book is going to open up as the third part of a series and you are going to realize that this series is not just about the villains, it is about the witches from the second book “The Beast Within.”

It is a simple but wonderful read and you can finish it in a few hours. Nothing much to say because anything else I say is going to become a spoiler.

Synopsis:
“The tale of the sea king's daughter Ariel is a beloved one of losing―and then finding―one's own voice.

The story has been told many times and in many ways. But always the mergirl wants more than her world can offer, and her father demands that she live within the confines of his domain. Her rebelliousness costs the little mermaid her voice and nearly her soul. But the power of good prevails, and Ariel emerges proud and unchanged.

And yet this is only half the story. So what of Ariel's nemesis, Ursula, the sea witch? What led to her becoming so twisted, scorned, and filled with hatred? Many tales have tried to explain her motives. Here is one account of what might have shaped the sea witch into a detestable and poor unfortunate soul.”

Even I am giving low points; it is a must-read to be able to understand the story of the main series. But as I mentioned before, read it in sequence.

I suggest buying the hardcover version if you are a true fan or want to give it as a gift to someone who is a fan.

The Beast Within

A Tale of Beauty's Prince

Book 2 of 8: Villains
Published: 22, July 2014
Genres: Teen & Young Adult Media Tie-In, Teen & Young Adult Fairy Tale & Folklore Adaptations, Children's Folk Tales & Myths, Teen & Young Adult Myths & Legends, Children's Royalty Books

The beast was and is one of my favorite characters in fairy tales and makes me wonder, why the girl had to suffer by marrying the prince instead of the beast because she was in love with the beast and not the prince. The prince was indeed the beast but she saw him as the beast and loved him as the beast. I always felt sad for her because of this story ending but that is my opinion and I am not asking for a debate but still, everyone is welcome to comment regarding this issue and tell me what you think.

This book deals with beasts transformation and his previous love interest who was a lot different than Bell and basically a few back story points that tie this book to the animated movie and how no one knew or remembered who the beast was before he was transformed. And some of these things are not going to be liked by many fans. I think the beast is not a villain but for some part and from Bell and her father’s point of view he was in some part of the time they met him. I don’t care if he is in this book series called Villains because at least I got to read a bit more about him.

Almost everyone knows what happened and why the prince was turned into the beast but after reading this you’ll know the whole story and realize why he was punished like that. Really a good read that you want to read for a long time but surely going to finish in a few hours and then going to want more of it.

This paragraph is the same as it was for book 1 - I think it is better to buy these books for your collection because the book covers and design are amazing. Young kids are going to love the stories and adults can like these also. The writing style is kind of simple and juvenile but don’t forget, it is written for young to adults who are fans of this kind of stuff. I actually love the books that are easy to read, because you can read more and fast and still understand and enjoy the story.

This book can be used as an addition to your beauty and the Beast collection and as a part of this Villain series. The choice is yours.

Even with a few minor flaws, I am going to give full points because it is about The Beast.

Synopsis:
“A cursed prince sits alone in a secluded castle.

Few have seen him, but those who claim they have say his hair is wild and nails are sharp--like a beast's! But how did this prince, once jovial and beloved by the people, come to be a reclusive and bitter monster? And is it possible that he can ever find true love and break the curse that has been placed upon him?”

I suggest buying the hardcover version if you are a true fan or want to give it as a gift to someone who is a fan.

Fairest of All

A Tale of the Wicked Queen

Published: 1, August 2017
Book 1 of 8: Villains
Genres: Teen & Young Adult Media Tie-In, Teen & Young Adult Fairy Tale & Folklore Adaptations, Children's Folk Tales & Myths, Teen & Young Adult Myths & Legends

This book series is about Walt Disney’s villains and about the life they had and what caused them to be like what you saw them on the screen.

I loved the idea but got kind of disappointed by the way the story was stretched and basically, the book is one day read if you want. The font is large and it is kind of good for young kids and adults who are still fans of those classic stories and cartoon movies.

I think it is better to buy these books for your collection because the book covers and design are amazing. Young kids are going to love the stories and adults can like these also. The writing style is kind of simple and juvenile but don’t forget, it is written for young to adults who are fans of this kind of stuff. I actually love the books that are easy to read, because you can read more and fast and still understand and enjoy the story.

The reason this queen became evil was a good idea and I liked it. I mean that’s how you must tell a story about how someone changed from a good-hearted person to an evil person.

Synopsis:
“For anyone who’s seen Walt Disney’s Snow White, you’ll know that the Wicked Queen is one evil woman! After all, it’s not everyone who wants to cut out their teenage step-daughter’s heart and have it delivered back in a locked keepsake box. (And even if this sort of thing is a common urge, we don’t know many people who have acted upon it.)

Now, for the first time, we’ll examine the life of the Wicked Queen and find out just what it is that makes her so nasty. Here’s a hint: the creepy-looking man in the magic mirror is not just some random spooky visage―and he just might have something to do with the Queen’s wicked ways!”

The only reason I am not giving full points is the stretching that this story got to add more pages to the actual short story. Otherwise, it is a wonderful and amazing book for young readers.

I suggest buying the hardcover version if you are a true fan or want to give it as a gift to someone who is a fan.
