The Man From Taured

World's Scariest Legends Book 3

The Man From Taured

World's Scariest Legends Book 3
Published: 11, February 2020

Author: Jeremy Bates
Genres: Action, Alternate History, American, Classics, Fantasy, Fiction, Horror, Literary, Literature, Movie Tie-In, Mystery, Psychological, Science Fiction, Supernatural, Suspense, Teen, Thrillers, Young Adult

The Review:

This is the story of a man from another dimension who came to our world in the year 2020 via interdimensional travel. This book was much better than the previous two books in the Legends series, Mosquito Man and The Sleep Experiment.

The beginning was incredible, but the middle was slow to the point of curing insomnia for some readers. For others who love technical stuff and want to know more about the subject of the book, it is highly recommended because it explains in crazy detail about dimensions and interdimensional travel and its possibilities.

The book is well-written and gives a great deal of information. However, readers will disagree with the style and information provided because not everyone wants to go into detail about how something happened in a story; instead, they want the story to move forward. However, in this book, progress is made at a glacial pace.

It was a wonderful read for someone like me because I belong to the group of readers who love to know everything that happens in the story, which is why I gave it a bit higher rating than it deserves for readers who don't like this kind of explanation.

Continuing from the previous paragraph, it was a fascinating and gripping story that demonstrated author Jeremy Bates' talent, knowledge, writing abilities, and research.

I had some issues with the main character's love interests and some sluggish speed issues, but I was still enamored with what I read. As stated at the outset of this review, I recommend this novel to patient readers.

This info may not matter to many readers but while reading this book, I felt the author's knowledge of Japan, its language and customs, as well as a lot about French colloquialism, and it made me respect him as an author even more.

Synopsis:

“From international bestselling author Jeremy Bates comes the third book in the WORLD'S SCARIEST LEGENDS series.

Ever been to Taured before? No? In fact, you’ve never heard of it? Well, neither had the rest of the world when in July of 2020 a European businessman shows up at Tokyo International Airport claiming to not only hail from the non-existent country but produces a legitimate passport.

What follows is a breakneck tale full of mystery, intrigue, and action that will keep you turning pages well past your bedtime.”

The Sleep Experiment

World's Scariest Legends Book 2

The Sleep Experiment

World's Scariest Legends Book 2
Published: 27, August 2019

Author: Jeremy Bates
Genres: Movie Tie-In, Fiction, Horror, Classics, Psychological, Thrillers, Supernatural, Literary, Literature, Suspense, Teen, Young Adult, Fantasy, Mystery, Alternate History, Science Fiction

The Review:

This story has it all: it's part horror, part suspense, and part thriller. Mr. Bates' writing was both incisive and vivid. The characters were convincing and realistic but stereotypical to the point of cringe overload. The plot of the narrative seems credible. The reader can infer that an experiment comparable to Dr. Wallis' was conducted. That just adds to the dread of this novel.

I was interested in learning more about the real "Russian Sleep Experiment" after hearing about it on a shady YouTube channel, but when I discovered that it was true, it piqued my interest because I have had some experience with the long-term effects of sleep deprivation, such as uncontrollable laughter and seeing sudden movements and shadows around you that may or may not be real, but I never looked into it further because the body simply can't stay awake after a few days.

The title of this book was the first thing that drew me into the series, and I believe that it perfectly captures the real story in its own twisted and unexpected way. But keep in mind that it isn't just about that Russian experiment; rather, it expands on it and creates its own world, characters, and situations.

Slow to begin, but that's what a slow burn is all about when you reach the boiling point and begin to see the truth you've been waiting to see since the first page. Not a huge book and can be finished in one or two sittings.

The way antihero is written is so good that you'll hate him on one page and then want to support and help him on the next. That is what a great author can do to the emotions of his or her readers. Yes, you will smell the cringe all around you as you read about the characters in this novel, but it was only a small part of the story, so I will not deduct points for it.

The World's Scariest Legends is supposed to be a series, but all of the books are standalone stories based on true stories. I'm glad I found this series, and I'm not going to hate the author or the series because of something that was specifically written to add to the story, because diverse and flawed characters are an important part of any story, and if everyone is perfect, the story will end on one page. So just read it without any preconceived notions and enjoy it.

Synopsis:

““SHOCKING...TERRIFYING"—Entertainment Weekly
From USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling author Jeremy Bates comes the second book in the all-new WORLD'S SCARIEST LEGENDS series.

In 1954, at the start of the Cold War, the Soviet military offered four political prisoners their freedom if they participated in an experiment requiring them to remain awake for fourteen days while under the influence of a powerful stimulant gas. The prisoners ultimately reverted to murder, self-mutilation, and madness.
None survived.

In 2018, Dr. Roy Wallis, an esteemed psychology professor at UC Berkeley, is attempting to recreate the same experiment during the summer break in a soon-to-be demolished building on campus. He and two student assistants share an eight-hour rotational schedule to observe their young Australian test subjects around the clock.

What begins innocently enough, however, morphs into a nightmare beyond description that no one could have imagined—with, perhaps, the exception of Dr. Roy Wallis himself.”

Mosquito Man

World's Scariest Legends Book 1

Mosquito Man
World's Scariest Legends Book 1
Published: 13, February 2019

Author: Jeremy Bates

Genres: Alternate History, Fantasy, Fiction, Ghost, Horror, Literature, Monster, Mysteries, Psychological, Science Fiction, Supernatural, Suspense, Teen, Thrillers, Young Adult

The Review:

This was a terrifying story that made me wonder what new terrors awaited me around the corner, and it was well worth the effort to find out what they were. It's the first installment in the World's Scariest Tales series, and it's based on "true" legends from around the globe. More characters and backstories are revealed as the story progresses, as are the horrors of the past and those who have returned to the present. I admire this author's work; if you read one of his books, you will not be disappointed.

People compare this author to Stephen King, but I must clarify that he is not Stephen King, but he can write well in his own style, create complex characters, and is fantastic at world-building.

The story may seem slow to action-oriented readers, but what is happening is that you are being introduced to the characters and receiving minute-by-minute commentary from them as they progress. The beginning is fast but slows down, then it picks up speed again until you reach the amazing ending, and I believe many readers will be divided as to whether it was great or not. But it was incredible for me.

Finally, I must admit that it was a little disappointing, and I'm not sure why. Maybe I was expecting too much, or the never-ending talks made it a little slower for my taste because I don't like fillers in anything just to make it longer, but I can understand talks that are actually informative, and this book was filled with those talks, but I was still unhappy about some things. It's still a fantastic read, but don't go in with high hopes or you'll be disappointed.

If you just start reading without thinking about who wrote it and wait for a "loud bang at the door," you'll be in a fast-paced survival situation, which is exactly what I look for in a book like this. Why not give it a shot? The book is only about 300 pages long and is a quick read.

Synopsis:

“If you've ever been in a remote area when something terrible goes wrong, then you know the fear of utter helplessness. Mosquito Man nails this. A superbly crafted psychological thriller." (New York Journal of Books)

From USA Today and number-one Amazon best-selling author Jeremy Bates comes the first book in the all-new World's Scariest Legends series.

After a woman bangs at the door in the middle of the night and promptly dies from her injury, a couple's remote cabin getaway becomes a psychological night of terror as they are hunted by an unknown assailant. Now they must go far beyond what they thought themselves capable of if they hope to save their young children and survive until morning.”

A Conjuring of Light

Published: 21, February 2017
Book 3 of 3: Shades of Magic

Author: V. E. Schwab

Genres: Action, Adult Fantasy, Adventure, Alternate History, Fantasy, Gaslamp Fantasy, Historical Fantasy, Magic, Science Fiction

The third and final book in the adult fantasy series "Shades of Magic," is a fantastic conclusion to the trilogy in which a fallen hero rises to defeat an ancient foe.

It's a lengthy book, but not as long as I wanted it to be because I wanted to learn more about these characters, despite the fact that there's a lot of action in it and the author does a fantastic job of describing it all in epic detail.

Because the authors are not able to tie all of the knots together, many fantasy trilogies disappoint at the end or end in a heap of rushed sputtering farce. That isn't the case with this book. It is an outstanding and well-rounded novel that is without a doubt the best in the series. But remember, this is the third part; if you haven't read the first two parts, nothing will make sense.

This book will make you feel the pain of losing something you care about, such as a close friend, a pet, or any other thing or person you are no longer able to meet or see. By the end of the book, the characters will remind you of this painful feeling, and I'm sure some readers will cry. Surprisingly, this book series made readers dislike it, but on the other hand, it was able to squeeze the heart to make it bleed tears out of the reader’s eyes, which is a sign of great writing, world-building, and character development.

I'm sure some people will despise this book, but it's not because of the author or the plot; it's because of the characters, which are purposefully written in this manner. I'm not sure why some people don't get it. Yes, I dislike many characters, but that does not mean I despise the book or the authors.

A Gathering of Shadows

Published: 23, February 2016
Book 2 of 3: Shades of Magic

Author: V. E. Schwab

Genres: Action, Adult Fantasy, Adventure, Alternate History, Fantasy, Gaslamp Fantasy, Historical Fantasy, Science Fiction

The story in this book picks up four months after the events of the first book, and all of our favorite characters are dealing with the fallout from that epic conclusion.

One of the characters has realized a dream, but others have not been so fortunate. Additionally, a new character is introduced, and I am sure many readers will enjoy him because he is a pirate, but not just any pirate; he is what we all love to read and imagine in a pirate.

The main female character will almost certainly be despised once more, and I felt the same way this time, but that is what the author intended; otherwise, there would be no plot twists, sufferings, endings, or beginnings to many things in the story.

This book started off slowly and wasn't as fast-paced as the first, but as it progressed, it became epic, which was one of the reasons I liked it even more. A plot and story about a magic tournament will take up a lot of pages. Consider it a high-powered magic tournament.

The main plot was a little dragged out, but I believe this was done to help readers get to know the main characters better and, in many cases, to make them hate a few characters even more while sympathizing with others. In my opinion, it was best for an open-minded reader.

The final scenes were epic, but some of the things said by the main female character made me hate her even more. I can only say one thing about this hatred, and that is my personal experience dealing with people who are actually the cause of our problem, but who say the same thing once the problem they created is solved. Simply read the book and comment on the feelings I'm describing.

The book is good and I am not going to give it low points just because I hated a character.

Synopsis:

“From #1 New York Times bestselling author V.E. Schwab

"Addictive and immersive, A Gathering of Shadows cements this series as a must-read." ―Entertainment Weekly, grade A

Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift, and into Black London.

In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games-an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries-a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again-and so to keep magic's balance, another London must fall...in V.E. Schwab's A Gathering of Shadows.

A Darker Shade of Magic

Published: 24, February 2015
Book 1 of 3: Shades of Magic

Author: V. E. Schwab

Genres: Action, Adult Fantasy, Adventure, Alternate History, Fantasy, Gaslamp Fantasy, Historical Fantasy, Science Fiction

This book is a mix of magic, interdimensional travel, strong female characters, criminal activity, a little romance, and four Londons set in four different dimensions. The author came up with one of the most original series ideas and executed it flawlessly.

This is an adult fantasy novel with so many amazing things to read about that I had to ask myself several times during the first read what parts of the book I enjoyed the most? In fact, the concept as a whole was quite unique. The four Londons that the protagonist can visit are White London, Red London, Black London, and Grey London. Whether they embrace it, worship it, kill for it, or don't believe in it, each London has a unique relationship with magic. Only major characters are able to travel between the Londons, implying that they are messengers and ambassadors for the rulers and this comes with some difficult challenges.

Another thing I liked was the main characters' collaboration, and the romance felt natural and not forced on the reader just to attract romance fans. I discovered relationships that aren't just between a girl and a boy and the like; in fact, I was impressed by the author's treatment of brotherly relationships and the relationships we have with people who aren't family but still we treat them like family.

In this book, I found a question that was partially answered, namely, what would you do if you had the power to do evil at a great magnitude, would you do it or would you control yourself? If you are not an evil person, it will be a test of your willpower as well as a self-discovery experience.

A few things were a little off, which wasn't a problem for me, but I felt compelled to inform the new readers. One thing I wanted more of was detail, which this book lacked.

The main female character may also offend some readers because, in order to portray her as a super tough woman, the author has almost turned her into a man who requires no assistance and, in particular, does not require the presence of a man in her life. I understand that it could be any woman we know, which is why I am fine with it, but it is not for everyone.

The dialogue was a little clichéd, but it was still a fun read, and I enjoyed it so much that I read all three books in the series and plan to read all of the author's books.

I believe a film adaptation of the series is in the works, but nothing has been heard about it since 2019. Keep an eye on this section because I'll post an update as soon as I find any new information on the subject.

Synopsis:

“A Darker Shade of Magic, from #1 New York Times bestselling author V.E. Schwab

Kell is one of the last Antari―magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.

Kell was raised in Arnes―Red London―and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.

Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.

"A Darker Shade of Magic has all the hallmarks of a classic work of fantasy. Schwab has given us a gem of a tale...This is a book to treasure."―Deborah Harkeness, New York Times bestselling author of the All Souls trilogy

11/22/63, The date of the Assassination of the thirty-fifth American president John F. Kennedy.

This book is one of the best books I have ever read and can easily be in the top hundred books of all time on my books list. You get almost all the genres in this story and King has delivered a great masterpiece once again. I suggest you watch the miniseries first and then read the book for a full feel and understanding of what it is all about. But it is true; you can’t beat a book when it comes to explaining something.

This book’s ending is so painful and it punches you hard and squeezes your heart if you love someone but that is what stories are meant to do, make you realize and understand the reality and fix the issues according to what you feel. If a book makes you think about a loved one, then go say “I love you” at that very moment, because you never know if it is the last time you are seeing or talking to someone.

This is a huge book but don’t be afraid, it is a fast read and you are going to want more once it is done, and actually, you can imagine a few more chapters of your own if you want. But it was all left for you to decide by the King.

With this book, the writer is going to explain the term “page-turner” and “can't put down” once you start reading this book.

This is not what the writer usually writes, I mean the genre but he has command over whatever he writes and this book is as great as most of his work. This is my second review of Mr. Stephen King but it feels like the first because of the different styles and genres of the two books I reviewed. But one thing is for sure, he is the King.

Synopsis:

“One of the Ten Best Books of The New York Times
Book Review Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize
Now a miniseries from Hulu starring James Franco

ON NOVEMBER 22, 1963, THREE SHOTS RANG OUT IN DALLAS, PRESIDENT KENNEDY DIED, AND THE WORLD CHANGED. WHAT IF YOU COULD CHANGE IT BACK?

In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King—who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer—takes readers on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

It begins with Jake Epping, a thirty-five-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him away—a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than fifty years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life—like Harry’s, like America’s in 1963—turning on a dime. Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession—to prevent the Kennedy assassination.

So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson, in a different world of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where there’s Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading eventually, of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful, and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.”

As with all of Mr. King’s books, I can't go below perfect score and recommendation.
