Forward the Foundation

This book is the second of two Foundation Series prequels. It's written in the same style as the original novel "Foundation," which is divided into chapters with time gaps/jumps between them.

This book was the author’s last book before his death and I am really sad for it because he was a genius and knew what he was doing. If you observe the main character Hari Seldon, then you are going to notice that he was like a literary alter ego of Isaac Asimov and I think it is true because he was way ahead of his time and had many similarities with the author and you can call this an autobiography of the author because if you read what Hari Seldon is doing and saying is actually what Isaac Asimov was thinking and wanted to say to the world.

Some of the stuff from this book feels so real in these days and one of the examples is the mobs in Washington DC storming Capitol Hill. I think some of these great authors had time machines or they had future vision because lots of the stuff I read in those books is coming true with every passing moment.

I am giving full ratings because it was the last work of a great writer and the main character is basically what I think is the author himself talking about his real-life thoughts and observations of his society through a character in his book.

You can start the series with this book also and it will be enough to make you understand the main plots and what is going on in the next books. But it is just a suggestion because if I am a reader who is reading a series, then I want to read all the books from that series, and it must be in a sequence.

Well written and gripping, a must-read for all the fans of this series. I hope we can continue sharing these books with our next generations because we are almost in times that were mentioned in these books.

Synopsis:
“The second of two prequel novels in Isaac Asimov’s classic science-fiction masterpiece, the Foundation series

THE EPIC SAGA THAT INSPIRED THE UPCOMING APPLE TV+ SERIES FOUNDATION, COMING 9/24/21

As Hari Seldon struggles to perfect his revolutionary theory of psychohistory and ensure a place for humanity among the stars, the great Galactic Empire totters on the brink of apocalyptic collapse. Caught in the maelstrom are Seldon and all he holds dear, pawns in the struggle for dominance. Whoever can control Seldon will control psychohistory—and with it the future of the Galaxy.

Among those seeking to turn psychohistory into the greatest weapon known to man are a populist political demagogue, the weak-willed Emperor Cleon I, and a ruthless militaristic general. In his last act of service to humankind, Hari Seldon must somehow save his life’s work from their grasp as he searches for its true heirs—a search that begins with his own granddaughter and the dream of a new Foundation.”

Prelude to Foundation

This novel is one of the two prequels of the Foundation series and you are going to read about the main or spiritual hero of this saga in this book and his name is Hari Seldon. This time it is not few pages or a chapter or two, instead, it is a full story and life of this character. I must remind you that this is the prequel to the original trilogy of the Foundation series, but that name is present in all the books of this series.

It is advisable to read at least the first three books in the series before reading this to feel the difference between Hari’s life before all his accomplishments. One other thing that you can do is to start the series from this book and think of it as the first book in the series. That way you may feel the grandness this character achieves in later books. The choice is yours but both ways are kind of a great idea to start on this epic journey if until now you read none of these books.

It is about a genius who has no idea about how great he is and once all the great powers want him and his idea, then he starts to realize what he can actually accomplish. It is a fun and enjoyable read in a hard science background.

As with the last book, the author shows that this books universe is connected with the Robots series and basically it doesn’t matter in the books but it feels good to know that all of that was happening in the same universe while this character was doing something, it was indirectly connected to some other character in some other book that we loved.

Overall a good story and buildup even we already know what this man is going to do in the future but still, it feels good to read about his life and how much he changed and had a realization of his greatness in building a future for humanity. As always brilliantly done by a brilliant author.

Little does the young Outworld mathematician know that he has already sealed his fate and the fate of humanity. Foundation and Earth

This book is going to lift the curtain from a lot of mysteries and answer many questions plus this time we are going on a journey to find a planet that was supposed to be the birthplace of humanity and was called Earth.

This story can be followed from the Foundation's Edge but can be a standalone book if you want but I suggest readers must read all the books in the series before reading it to be able to know everything that is happening or names that are being used.

The way this book is written is like it was going to be the final book of the Foundation series because of the way all the loose ends and expeditions from that era in the story concluded but thanks to the author for not ending the series as he planned. Later he published more books, extending the series and I am glad for that because I love reading long series that is part of an even bigger universe like this book universe is connected with the Robots series, it was one of my most favorite book series and I wish there were more books from that series. (Next, I am reviewing the Robots series.)

This book is way different from the other book in the series and the plot is not as complicated as it was in other books related to main Foundation plots. It is like a spaceship plot generator and you are going to read about so many famous things and missions that were later copied or twisted in other space-related books and movies. The story is great and I liked it even more once I realized the Robots series is a part of this universe.

You are going to imagine characters from famous movies while reading this book. It is not that the author stole anything, he is the pioneer and others follow him.

Just two more books to go from this series and then time for Robots series, I am really excited about reviewing that series and I recommend it, same as this series.

Synopsis:
“The fifth novel in Isaac Asimov’s classic science-fiction masterpiece, the Foundation series

THE EPIC SAGA THAT INSPIRED THE UPCOMING APPLE TV+ SERIES FOUNDATION, COMING 9/24/21

Golan Trevize, former Councilman of the First Foundation, has chosen the future, and it is Gaia. A superorganism, Gaia is a holistic planet with a common consciousness so intensely united that every dewdrop, every pebble, every being, can speak for all—and feel for all. It is a realm in which privacy is not only undesirable, it is incomprehensible.

But is it the right choice for the destiny of mankind? While Trevize feels it is, that is not enough. He must know.

Trevize believes the answer lies at the site of humanity’s roots: fabled Earth . . . if it still exists. For no one is sure where the planet of Gaia’s first settlers is to be found in the immense wilderness of the Galaxy. Nor can anyone explain why no record of Earth has been preserved, no mention of it made anywhere in Gaia’s vast world-memory. It is an enigma Trevize is determined to resolve, and a quest he is determined to undertake, at any cost.”

This book feels fresh and well written than all three books before it. I think the reason is the times it was written, and the other thing is the writing experience the author had at this time.

Reading this book is not what you were expecting to read, because it is not like the last three books. This time it is more character-driven, unlike the past books that were all about technology plots and twists. Still, it is a part of the main series and starts after the five hundred years of an event from the last three books but I am not mentioning the event just in case someone didn’t read the previous books.

It is well written as you can expect from a master like Mr. Isaac Asimov and grips you for most of the time but in the end, some people may not like it but that entirely depends on who is reading. The main reason is the technology that is introduced but I loved it because I knew the hints and the way these were copied in other books and even a lot of games. It is written in almost the modern era so you can actually feel the transformation of tech in this book to our daily lives now and what we can see coming in our future.

This time it is about an enemy thought to be extinct but still in control from the shadows with strings to power in hand. I felt a technology war is going on and we are going to see which side has better tech plus a new concept that is being used in many movies and science fiction ever since this book came out. We already found out about mind control or mind manipulation, but this time this concept increases to the point of planetary level and that is what I liked a lot.

Even with this great plot I believe in free will and that may be the reason some of the readers may feel conflicted and that is all I can say about this subject. Comment or message me about your thoughts on this matter after reading the book.

Synopsis:
“The fourth novel in Isaac Asimov’s classic science-fiction masterpiece, the Foundation series

THE EPIC SAGA THAT INSPIRED THE UPCOMING APPLE TV+ SERIES FOUNDATION, COMING 9/24/21

At last, the costly and bitter war between the two Foundations has come to an end. The scientists of the First Foundation have proved victorious, and now they return to Hari Seldon’s long established plan to build a new Empire on the ruins of the old. But rumors persist that the Second Foundation is not destroyed after all—and that its still-defiant survivors are preparing their revenge. Now two exiled citizens of the Foundation—a renegade Councilman and a doddering historian—set out in search of the mythical planet Earth . . . and proof that the Second Foundation still exists.

Meanwhile someone—or something—outside of both Foundations seems to be orchestrating events to suit its own ominous purpose. Soon representatives of both the First and Second Foundations will find themselves racing toward a mysterious world called Gaia and a final, shocking destiny at the very end of the universe.”

The only reason I am not giving a full rating is the way it may not feel good to some readers at the last parts of the story.

Second Foundation

This book basically completes the original trilogy but was not the end of the Foundation series as we can find four more books from this series after this one.

A lot is happening in this book and the story turns around and you are facing the main issues of the first book but that is intended and intentional by the author because he wanted to complete all loose ends at the end. A new way of controlling and manipulating is invented. I am only hinting on the stuff that is going on but I am not using exact words to describe anything here for the benefit of the readers who still didn’t read the first two books. The author never lets you get a hint of what is actually happening until the end and that is what I like about these books.

A message for the female readers… as you know these books are from a time when reading or seeing a female in these science fiction stories was very rare and in these books, it is the same. I found two girls worth any mention and I am sure you are going to enjoy reading about them but don’t forget, they are in a male dominant society unlike what our society is now... for example smoking is in all the meetings and is a norm, or a man disapproving of an idea just because it was given by a woman.

For me, it was something that a female reader can use to get inspiration instead of feeling bad or getting mad. Yes, some parts may feel cringe-worthy in these times but you can learn what it was like for the women in those times even if they were shown to be in modern society thousands of years in the future.

This book ends the first trilogy grandly and is one of the most crafted and fixed stories out of the first three books. It is compelling and interesting even after so long and many rereads for me and that is because of the great writing of the author who was able to spin a science fiction saga that doesn’t feel outdated even after so much advancement in our society and actual scientific knowledge.

I was confused at the announcement of the TV show but I know they can do justice to the books and going to show the action side of these stories instead of the main drama and talking from the books.

When I was a kid I thought it is different from all other books and when I grew up and read it again, then I realized what makes it so different. It is written in a way that the characters are just tools to tell us a great story of ideas that are grand like the universe.

Synopsis:
“The third novel in Isaac Asimov’s classic science-fiction masterpiece, the Foundation series

THE EPIC SAGA THAT INSPIRED THE UPCOMING APPLE TV+ SERIES FOUNDATION, COMING 9/24/21

The Foundation lies in ruins—destroyed by a mutant mind bent on humanity’s annihilation. But it’s rumored that there’s a Second Foundation hidden somewhere at the end of the Galaxy, established as insurance to preserve the knowledge of mankind. Now a desperate race has begun between the survivors of the First Foundation and an alien entity to find this last flicker of humanity’s shining past—and future hope. Yet the key to it all might be a fourteen-year-old girl burdened with a terrible secret. Is she the Foundation’s savior—or its deadliest enemy?

Unforgettable, thought-provoking, and riveting, Second Foundation is a stunning novel of adventure and ideas writ huge across the Galaxy—a powerful tale of humankind’s struggle to preserve the fragile light of wisdom against the threat of its own dark barbarism.”

Foundation

Published: 1942
Author: Isaac Asimov
Book 1 of 7: Foundation

Genres: Classic American Fiction, Classic Science Fiction, Dystopian Science Fiction, Space Opera, Adventure

First thing, this book is a masterpiece and one of the greatest science fiction book series that expands generations and thousands of years. If you like grand schemes and larger than life ideas that can bring huge change for the entirety of a race and can change the way whole humanity lives and thinks, then this book is surely for you, but if you want nonstop action then it may feel slow and boring even it is not.

You may feel as if you read it before or it may feel familiar; the reason is that this book and its ideas were stolen and copied in many other books and movies but don’t worry this is the original daddy of them all.

It won the Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series" in 1966. The story of this series expands millennia and tells the story of an intergalactic empire’s rise and fall and the struggle of rebuilding it. The way generations pass and adventures start and end is so huge that you may never grasp it till you actually read it.

This book is not for everyone, even if you saw the trailer of the adaptation of this book series and are planning to read this book, I must warn you that it is really a book that belongs to a genre that is called hard science fiction and may bore you in some parts. But still, I recommend this book series to everyone because you can actually learn something about society and humanity from it.

This book is actually not very easy to read and one of the main reasons is the time jumps. These jumps are intentional and the author intended the book to be like this. Later you are going to understand, and all of it will become clear. The only issue is that you can never fully get used to the characters because of these time jumps. And then in many cases, you won't even read a word about these past characters.

A few days ago I saw the trailer of a TV show and realized it was the adaptation of this book series and it made me very happy, I hope they stay with the original material. After watching the trailer, I knew it is time for a review of this book series because now people who don’t know the author are going to learn about him and this is a perfect time to introduce this great author to the whole world.

This book was a birthday gift from an aunt who knew I love reading science fiction. I read it and was amazed by it. Later I bought the whole series and read it in a span of three months.

This book is like a collection of viewpoints of different people on one subject. Some you are going to love and some may feel boring or bad to you. But if you understand the purpose of all this then you’ll surely enjoy it and what it is showing you is the world that is being rebuilt.

I noticed one amazing thing about all these great science fiction authors, all the futuristic worlds they built in the books all those years ago still feel real and not at all outdated in these times. It is proof of the vastness of these authors’ minds and writing prowess. Mr. Isaac Asimov was no exception and he wrote so many of my favorite books.

As a kid, I loved reading about robots and was fascinated by the robots series by the author. Review of that series coming as soon as I am done with this series.

Synopsis:
“The first novel in Isaac Asimov’s classic science-fiction masterpiece, the Foundation series

SOON TO BE AN APPLE TV+ SERIES, COMING 9/24/21 • Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read

For twelve thousand years the Galactic Empire has ruled supreme. Now it is dying. But only Hari Seldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, can see into the future—to a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare that will last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save humankind, Seldon gathers the best minds in the Empire—both scientists and scholars—and brings them to a bleak planet at the edge of the galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for future generations. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation.

The Foundation novels of Isaac Asimov are among the most influential in the history of science fiction, celebrated for their unique blend of breathtaking action, daring ideas, and extensive worldbuilding. In Foundation, Asimov has written a timely and timeless novel of the best—and worst—that lies in humanity, and the power of even a few courageous souls to shine a light in a universe of darkness.”

This book and series are not for everyone and that is why I can't give full points to this one. But still, it is hundred percent recommended.

Cold Hearted

Book 8 of 8: Villains
Published: 6, July 2021
Author: Serena Valentino

Genres: Teen & Young Adult Media Tie-In, Teen & Young Adult Fairy Tale & Folklore Adaptations, Children's Folk Tales & Myths, Teen & Young Adult Myths & Legends, Fantasy, Disney

This was an unexpected story, you know these are villains but a villain that is going to make you cry is here. We all know Cinderella’s stepmother Lady Tremaine; almost everyone hates her for the way she treats Cinderella and wants to ruin her life, but after reading this book, I am sure lots of people are going to feel sad for her because of the circumstances and the way her bad choices and mistake after mistake changed her life.

This book is going to tell us something about bad people and why people do bad stuff to others and in some cases; they lost something or want love or approval from a loved one. But then you find out something else and that is, some people are just bad, it doesn’t matter how they lived or how good you are to them, they will be bad no matter what.

I hope everyone who reads this book is going to learn from it. A simple and fast read as with all the books from this series. The author is actually well versed in Disney’s animated movies and the characters from these movies and stories. She took all these villains and gave them her own touch to make us understand the cause of evil they represent, but after reading this series you are going to feel differently about many of them.

I think this is not the last book in this series because I felt a lot of explanations are due from the main series and a lot of villains are left for us to read about. I am sure after reading this book you are going to end up pitying Lady Tremaine and then you are going to want more of these books with other villains that are still not included in this series.

A good and fast read with something for everyone. You can finish it in less than three hours if not a fast reader. Just start from the first book and read in sequence to enjoy all these books to the fullest. It was a wonderful series and it is very close to my heart even I am not from the recommended age. But for me, age has nothing to do with what I read or do. Because I follow “Peter Pan” philosophy of “you start to grow old as soon as you stop being a kid” (my own saying) and I never stopped being a kid and never will.

This paragraph is going to be the same for this book series so If you already read it previously then just skip to the next paragraph - This book series is about Walt Disney’s villains and about the life they had and what caused them to be like what you saw them on the screen. I always wanted to know about the other side of the story when I saw a villain do something evil. And I think now is the time when we can see and read about that because I see movies and read books about antiheroes and even villain’s backgrounds. Our society is at last evolving and adopting the open-minded approach and that is why we are trying to learn the opposite side’s story also.

Warning: This book may make you shed some tears depending on how hard it tugs at your heartstrings so just in case, keep a few tissues close at hand.

Synopsis:
“This was supposed to be her happily ever after...

It’s a familiar tale: A kind and beautiful young girl, reeling from loss. A doting father, frantic to bring a mother’s love back into his daughter’s life. And the selfish, cruel woman who insinuates herself into that family―a woman so unfeeling, so cold hearted, that when her new husband dies, she makes the girl a servant in her own home.

But who is that evil stepmother, that icy lady of the house? How did she become so closed off that, in the face of a child’s grief, she thought only to seek wealth and power for herself and her abhorrent daughters? Before that fateful ball, before the glass slipper and the prince, there was another story―a story of love and grief, of hope and of dreams dashed. It is the story of Lady Tremaine.

Even the coldest of villains are sometimes wives and mothers, women who loved and lost and hoped for something grander for their lives . . . once upon a dream.

The latest novel in Serena Valentino’s deliciously devious Villains series introduces the most famed and hated wicked stepmother of them all―but turns everything you know about her on its head.”

Evil Thing

Book 7 of 8: Villains
Published: 7, July 2020
Author: Serena Valentino

Genres: Teen & Young Adult Media Tie-In, Teen & Young Adult Fairy Tale & Folklore Adaptations, Children's Folk Tales & Myths, Teen & Young Adult Myths & Legends, Fantasy, Disney

At last, a book about a stylish villain Cruella De Vil. I know this series is about the villains from Disney and all of us started and thought as if we are going to read about the origins of all these villains but the author introduced her own new characters and we found out in most cases it was the hidden hand of these characters that were involved in shaping the lives and stories of most of these known characters. For some, it was a wonderful idea and for some it is boring, but for me, it is a great idea to show and expand on the universe so we can enjoy it more and find more stories and possibilities in this already huge universe.

Cruella does not belong in the same category as the other villains of the past books, because she belongs to the modern world. And that is why you are only going to find very few things that are going to connect this book to other books and the main background story. It is not much but I liked the hint and the touch writer gave to it. One more thing that I must clear is that I did not watch the new movie called “Cruella” yet so I don’t know if it is the same story or based on this book or not. (Going to watch the movie very soon, so keep an eye on this area for an update.)

The book tells Cruella's story as an autobiography and shows the side of her that we never knew and the reasons behind her turn to what we saw in the movies. I really love the first-person narrative and this one is no exception, Cruella tells her story in this book and surely you are going to love it plus the ending is great so be ready for saying wow at the end.

A fun and creative story to read, it makes you sad for the villain. Her plan to do what she wanted to do with the puppies is unforgivable but still as a human you are still going to be sad for her just like you felt sad for other villains in previous books.

I think I found a clue and it is something or a pair of things that are cursed and that is in my opinion going to be revealed later. (It is just my guess and may have nothing to do with the next stories. Ask me privately or comment if you found out what I am talking about)

Synopsis:
“Cruella De Vil is the perfect villain: stylish, witty, relentless...and possibly cursed.

From her lonely childhood, to her iconic fashion choices, to that fateful car crash (you know the one), Cruella tells all in this marvelous memoir of a woman doomed. Even the cruelest villains have best friends, true loves, and daring dreams. Now it's Cruella’s turn to share hers.

This latest novel by the author of the wildly popular and darkly fascinating Villains series brings readers a tale told by the Evil Thing herself―a tale of the complicated bonds of female friendship, of mothers and daughters, and of burning, destructive desire.

After all, nothing is as simple as black and white.”

Not a long read and can be finished in one sitting and may take three hours if you are a fan of Cruella.

The audiobook is not out available, I was hoping to listen to this after listening to the last book’s audio because that was amazing. I’ll add the link as soon as the audio version of this book is out.

I suggest buying the hardcover version if you are a true fan or want to give it as a gift to someone who is a fan.

The Odd Sisters

A Villains Novel
Book 6 of 8: Villains
Published: 2, July 2019

Genres: Teen & Young Adult Media Tie-In, Teen & Young Adult Fairy Tale & Folklore Adaptations, Children's Folk Tales & Myths, Teen & Young Adult Myths & Legends, Wizards & Witches Fantasy, Epic Fantasy

The first thing that I immediately loved about this book was the maps of the kingdoms from these books and the artwork. It kind of gives the reader a sense of how a character looks like and a sense of reality and awareness when you see the maps. I am not sure if all the copies are the same as mine, I mean contain the maps and art or not but if you don’t have then basically it doesn’t matter and these won’t make the story any different than what it is. Besides you can imagine the places and characters in your mind as with any other book you read.

This book is a fast read and I was able to finish it in a couple of hours and was left wanting for more as with lots of good series like this one.

Lots of people are not happy with this book because once more they didn’t read the previous books and this time this story is kind of all about the new characters that are not actually in the movies. I liked the idea because you are not just bound to read about the few characters and villains that you already know. I am hoping that Disney is going to expand the animated universe and include the characters of this series as well.

After the ending of the fifth book, I was crazily waiting for this book and I was not disappointed to know what happens and as always it is all going to be a spoiler if I talk about any of the books because I know some people reading this review are first-time readers and may get a hint of what happens and may not like it if I ruin the story, suspense, and excitement for them.

The story expands even more and you know about one of the main evils behind lots of stuff that is happening. The mash-up of characters is my favorite thing in any media, especially games, comics, and books, and as with the review of the fifth book of this series "Mother Knows Best," I must remind you about the game Kingdom Hearts, this book series reminds me of that game series a lot and I must mention it so I can invite you to that huge and beautiful universe also. (Link to the game at the bottom with book links)

I must inform you about the audio version of this book here. It is amazing and I am sure you are going to love the voice actor and the way she is telling the story. It is true, I get a commission if you buy the audio but I only say it if I like the audio myself and you must go and check the sample from the link at the bottom to hear it for yourself and understand that I am telling the truth about the audio version of this book.

Synopsis:
“Throughout the Villains series, the Odd Sisters have meddled in the lives of the Wicked Queen, The Beast, Ursula, Maleficent, and Mother Gothel, changing the course of fate for the greatest villains ever known. Now, it’s time for their reckoning.

This latest novel by the author of the wildly popular Villains series goes deeper into the lives of the twisted, diabolical Odd Sisters, finally revealing the dark truth about who they are and where they're from. The Odd Sisters will appeal to fans who can’t get enough of the mischievous sisters, as well as draw new readers to Serena Valentino’s darkly fascinating take on the Disney Villains.”

I suggest buying the hardcover version if you are a true fan or want to give it as a gift to someone who is a fan.
