The Review:
Overall, it was a decent read. A solid narrative, fascinating characters, an engaging read, and an unusually gratifying finish for the King. Overall, not particularly innovative, relying on the old themes of roaming/roving bands of "shining" vampires and the master-apprentice connection, but it's still a lot of fun.
I was busy during the days it was released and was both surprised and delighted to learn of its existence. I have yet to see the movie adaptation, so I can't say whether it is good or not, but I will soon, so keep an eye on this section of the blog or leave a comment if you have.
This work, like The Shining, may be read as a stand-alone, although I recommend reading The Shining first. It really doesn't matter except to become acquainted with some backstories and characters.
Remember that it is not as legendary or memorable as its predecessor, The Shining, but it is still a wonderful narrative with vampires added to the mix of spirits and more individuals with the gift of Shining.
I enjoyed the continuation of the main story several years later when the main character has grown up. I'd always been curious about what happened to him after the hotel events and how he used his Shining abilities. This book provided me with all of the answers to my questions.
This book cannot be compared to the original first part; still, it deserves full marks on its own, but some readers may disagree with me, and the reason for this is the disappointment they may feel if they enter this book expecting another shining with horror elements and a scary story. I refer to it as an expanded and watered-down universe of that book.
Synopsis:
“Now a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor!
From master storyteller Stephen King, his unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining—an instant #1 New York Times bestseller that is “[a] vivid frightscape” (The New York Times).
Years ago, the haunting of the Overlook Hotel nearly broke young Dan Torrance’s sanity, as his paranormal gift known as “the shining” opened a door straight into hell. And even though Dan is all grown up, the ghosts of the Overlook—and his father’s legacy of alcoholism and violence—kept him drifting aimlessly for most of his life. Now, Dan has finally found some order in the chaos by working in a local hospice, earning the nickname “Doctor Sleep” by secretly using his special abilities to comfort the dying and prepare them for the afterlife. But when he unexpectedly meets twelve-year-old Abra Stone—who possesses an even more powerful manifestation of the shining—the two find their lives in sudden jeopardy at the hands of the ageless and murderous nomadic tribe known as the True Knot, reigniting Dan’s own demons and summoning him to battle for this young girl’s soul and survival...”
