Survive the Night

The book is a fun read and you can’t stop reading it, but I think it started a bit slow, then changed into a crazy fast-paced page-turner.

If you are a fan of the writer then maybe you’ll get disappointed because this book is not on the level of his previous books but don’t worry, it won’t make you hate or stop reading his upcoming books.

I felt like watching a movie that is made to give homage and respect to the movies from the eighties and nineties. The twists and turns are good and some changes that were never taken by the main female were absurd and crazy.

It was a great and useless story at the same time and the only reason and aspect that can be blamed for that is the main character because you are surely going to like others very much and going to feel for them but if you are like me, then I think you are not going to like her in real life either and that is the reason many people are going to hate the story, not because the writer is bad or the story is bad, it is just this character.

And if you think with an open mind then you are going to realize the reason the writer wrote her this way is to make the reader crazy while reading. Because you can finish this book in one sitting, even with a twister story, you can understand what is happening in the first two hours of reading time, and if she is not doing what she is doing in the story, then this book becomes worthless and no one was going to like it.

My final thoughts on this book: sometimes it is okay to read strange and silly stories, it helps your brain relax and forget the reality like being on a bumpy ride.

From The Back Cover:
“THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

One of New York Times Book Review's "summer reads guaranteed to make your heart thump and your skin crawl"; An Amazon Best of the Month Pick; Named a must-read summer book by The Washington Post, USA Today, Vulture, BuzzFeed, Forbes, Entertainment Weekly, CNN, New York Post, Good Housekeeping, E!, PopSugar, CrimeReads, Thrillist, and BookRiot.

It’s November 1991. Nirvana's in the tape deck, George H. W. Bush is in the White House, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer.

Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie. They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio. Both have good reasons for wanting to get away. For Charlie, it’s guilt and grief over the shocking murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer. For Josh, it’s to help care for his sick father—or so he says.

The longer she sits in the passenger seat, the more Charlie notices there’s something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn’t want her to see inside the trunk. As they travel an empty, twisty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly anxious Charlie begins to think she’s sharing a car with the Campus Killer. Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie’s jittery mistrust merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination?

One thing is certain—Charlie has nowhere to run and no way to call for help. Trapped in a terrifying game of cat and mouse played out on pitch-black roads and in neon-lit parking lots, Charlie knows the only way to win is to survive the night.”

Normally I never read sports-related stories or watch movies from this genre because they kind of all are the same in many ways. But this book is different and I had to read it because it is written by Mr. John Grisham. The story is about a basketball player from an African country and his family.

The first thing you are going to notice is the feeling of listening to a commentary while reading the parts on the court, the play-by-play info of the basketball moving around, the dribbles, the catches, and the movement of the players. That’s how you write a book about sports and what is happening to make a reader visualize every moment like he/she is actually watching or listening to a radio.

The way the writer portrayed the living conditions and situation in many of the African countries is so realistic and painful to read and I am sure many of you may start sending donations to these deserving people after reading this book.

You are going to learn a lot from this book, not just about basketball and the selection system…you are going to learn how other humans are suffering while we don’t even know about it.

From The Back Cover:
“NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • John Grisham takes you to a different kind of court in his first basketball novel. Samuel “Sooley” Sooleymon is a raw, young talent with big hoop dreams—and even bigger challenges off the court.

“Hard to put down ... the pages turn quickly ... building to a climax that won’t leave readers doubting whether this is a John Grisham novel.” —Associated Press

In the summer of his seventeenth year, Samuel Sooleymon gets the chance of a lifetime: a trip to the United States with his South Sudanese teammates to play in a showcase basketball tournament. He has never been away from home, nor has he ever been on an airplane. The opportunity to be scouted by dozens of college coaches is a dream come true.

Samuel is an amazing athlete, with speed, quickness, and an astonishing vertical leap. The rest of his game, though, needs work, and the American coaches are less than impressed.

During the tournament, Samuel receives devastating news from home: A civil war is raging across South Sudan, and rebel troops have ransacked his village. His father is dead, his sister is missing, and his mother and two younger brothers are in a refugee camp.

Samuel desperately wants to go home, but it’s just not possible. Partly out of sympathy, the coach of North Carolina Central offers him a scholarship. Samuel moves to Durham, enrolls in classes, joins the team, and prepares to sit out his freshman season. There is plenty of more mature talent and he isn’t immediately needed.

But Samuel has something no other player has: a fierce determination to succeed so he can bring his family to America. He works tirelessly on his game, shooting baskets every morning at dawn by himself in the gym, and soon he’s dominating everyone in practice. With the Central team losing and suffering injury after injury, Sooley, as he is nicknamed, is called off the bench. And the legend begins.

But how far can Sooley take his team? And will success allow him to save his family?

Gripping and moving, Sooley showcases John Grisham’s unparalleled storytelling powers in a whole new light. This is Grisham at the top of his game..”

If you are a Grisham fan then it doesn't matter what points I give, you are still going to read this book. But I recommend this book to everyone even if you are not a fan of the writer or the sport it is about; just read it to know about the people around the world.

Warning: do not read this book if you have depression.

Rating: 90/100

The Last Thing He Told Me

Once more a book that is going to divide the readers on the quality, story, and all the aspects of this book. For some, it is going to be great and for some, it is just a waste of time. I am on the side of people who are going to like this book. The story has twists and what you are reading at the start is going to change into something else. It was like the writer started a story and then by the end, it was changed into another story. The problem with writing a review of this kind of book is very hard if the reviewer can’t share any part of the story to keep it spoiler-free.

Few things that I wanted to see was a bit of backstory between the husband and wife and her reasons for doing what she did for so long and one thing that I never like is the part or information from a story that is purposefully hidden from the reader and I hate that kind of writing. So get ready to be disappointed or mad if you don’t like this trick of keeping stuff hidden from the reader. I personally don’t like it but in some cases it can be okay if that is what a good story demands. Let me know in the comments what you think of this kind of trick from this book.

The twists in this book are worth reading and are surely going to make an impact on most of the females in my opinion. But still, this book is a very fast read and very simple in many ways. Think of the story as a video game and the setting is on very easy so the player can beat all odds and win in one turn. That is how simple this is for the characters in this book. I think that is enough that I can tell without spoiling this book for you.

From The Back Cover:
“#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A HIGHLY ANTICIPATED, BEST BOOK OF SUMMER SELECTED BY * VOGUE * USA TODAY * ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY * CNN * TOWN & COUNTRY * PARADE * BUSTLE * AND MORE!

A “gripping” (Entertainment Weekly) mystery about a woman who thinks she’s found the love of her life—until he disappears.

Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.

As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared.

Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they’re also building a new future—one neither of them could have anticipated.

With its breakneck pacing, dizzying plot twists, and evocative family drama, The Last Thing He Told Me is a riveting mystery, certain to shock you with its final, heartbreaking turn.”

The rating for this book was not easy to give, because I found this a very simple read, and many people may not feel satisfied by it, I wanted to give more points but that will be cheating with my readers.
