2001: A Space Odyssey

Once again I am about to write the same sentence that I wrote about a good science fiction book called “Project Hail Mary”… This is how a science fiction book is written, with science in it, not just science it is called hard science and it is a book genre. Grandmaster Arthur C. Clark was basically giving us all a class in how to write a science fiction book without making it into a fantasy. Here I must confess that I believe science fiction and fantasy are basically the same thing but are the two sides of the same coin. Comment and tell me what you think?

Before you judge me, I said the writer wrote hard science fiction, which means if you write carefully, the reader never even notices that it is basically fantasy because all the facts and research backs you up and it becomes reality even some of the theories were never tested. One example of magic, fantasy, and Science Fiction combined is the series called “Darkness (World at War)” you can check one of these book's review here,  and one more series that I am reading is about a boy who becomes immortal and according to the writer, she is writing this series as a mix of almost all the genres, it means she is going to add magic, science fiction, and fantasy and many more genres in her upcoming books and I am so excited for that. At the moment only two books are out. Check the books called Queen of Egypt and Pharaoh’s destruction from the series In Pursuit Of Death by Ruby.K Gold.

Okay back to the book I am supposed to review, 2001: a Space Odyssey. Basically, it doesn’t matter what I write about this book, it is always going to be one of the greatest science fiction books of all time. It is not huge like Sir Arthur C. Clark’s other mammoth series but it leaves something with you and makes you wonder about yourself, the universe, and creation.

Do not watch the movie until you are done with the book or if you already watched it, then read the book to understand what was happening because the movie can't show you what is being thought and what is in the background of some things that happened on screen.

Without giving away anything, I can only tell the reader that this book is the story of humanity and much more if you go deep into the story.

Synopsis:
“The classic science fiction novel that captures and expands on the vision of Stanley Kubrick’s immortal film—and changed the way we look at the stars and ourselves.

From the savannas of Africa at the dawn of mankind to the rings of Saturn as man ventures to the outer rim of our solar system, 2001: A Space Odyssey is a journey unlike any other.

This allegory about humanity’s exploration of the universe—and the universe’s reaction to humanity—is a hallmark achievement in storytelling that follows the crew of the spacecraft Discovery as they embark on a mission to Saturn. Their vessel is controlled by HAL 9000, an artificially intelligent supercomputer capable of the highest level of cognitive functioning that rivals—and perhaps threatens—the human mind.

Grappling with space exploration, the perils of technology, and the limits of human power, 2001: A Space Odyssey continues to be an enduring classic of cinematic scope.”

Project Hail Mary

Originally Published: 4, May 2021
Author: Andy Weir
Genres: Science Fiction, Adventure, Space Opera, Humor

This is how a science fiction book is written, with science in it. It is Mr. Andy Weir’s third novel, after 2011's The Martian, and 2017's Artemis.

It is going to remind you of The Martian but think of The Martian as a kindergartener and this book as a senior about to graduate. Sometimes my brother tells me not to praise a book so much to the point of making people think that I am getting paid to promote a book, this book is one of those books where I want to tell the reader to just buy the book and start reading. It is AMAZING.

While reading this, I don’t know why, I wanted to reread the classic “2001: A Space Odyssey” by one of the science fiction giants, Arthur C. Clarke. (My next review is going to be of this great book)

The characters are all loveable but in some cases, can feel two-dimensional but it doesn’t get in the way of the story and you are surely going to finish the book in four to five hours max. Once you start you’ll finish or won’t be able to concentrate on anything else until you are done with this book.

Only a few letdowns. If you think the environment is safe and global warming is fake, and if you think science, engineering, and electric issues in a spaceship can’t happen, then do not read this or be warned that it is kind of based on real science that some people think is not real. The book can be a little bit longer for some readers who don’t like to read the details of how stuff works and how something happened.

I am giving the rating based on the people who are connected with the paragraph above this one; otherwise, it is a hundred percent recommended book.

Synopsis:
“NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of The Martian, a lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster in this “propulsive” (Entertainment Weekly), cinematic thriller full of suspense, humor, and fascinating science—in development as a major motion picture starring Ryan Gosling.

“An epic story of redemption, discovery and cool speculative sci-fi.”—USA Today

“If you loved The Martian, you’ll go crazy for Weir’s latest.”—The Washington Post

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone.

Or does he?

An irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could deliver, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian—while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.”

The False Mirror

Published: 1992
Author: Alan Dean Foster
Book 2 of 3: Damned
Genres: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Space Opera

This book is one of my first books from an open air book market, it was in a large parking area and was full of books from one corner to the other, and I had never seen so many books out of a library before. My brother was with me and he saw the cover of this book and thought it was related to Star Wars and bought it for me with many other books that had anything to do with an alien creature on the cover.

This series is probably Mr. Alan Dean Foster’s best book series and remember his work includes books from Star Wars and Star Trek universes.

This trilogy is amazing for one great reason, you can actually read any of the three parts and they all feel as a solo book.

The twist in this book is going to make you crazy and it surly makes you think of real world implications of this twist.

I wish the writer wrote more of this universe but the good thing is that the way all the books were written, he left margin for more books and stories if he wants to continue.

The characters are well written and you can see yourself in the shoes of any of them. You can actually feel what both side are feeling and thinking about the other and that makes the twist even more amazing.

The first book was not as great as the second one, so much better you start from this book and then read the first and then the third book of this series to get the full feel and experience. Believe me, you won’t even notice you are reading second part of a series unless someone told you about it and still the way these books are written, you can enjoy them as solo books as well.

Synopsis:
"The second book of a science-fiction trilogy. For millennia, the alien union called the Weave had been at war with the Amplitur, but only in the handful of centuries since Earth had joined the Weave had the tide of battle been slowly turning in the Weave's favor.

As war rages on between the Amplitur and the union of races known as the Weave, Ranji--an Ashregan warrior trained from birth to battle humans--is captured, and he soon learns of the Amplitur's vile genetic manipulations."

DUNE

Published: 1965
Author: Frank Herbert
Book 1 of 8: The Dune Series or The Dune Saga
Genres: Sword & Sorcery Fantasy, Space Operas, Epic Fantasy, science fiction

In simple words the greatest and number one science fiction novel ever. And truly the best-selling science fiction novel in history.

My first introduction to the Dune universe was by playing an experimental game that no one wanted to buy in a Sega game store, so the owner sold it to me for almost nothing, I played the game, it was something I never played before, but in a few minutes of watching the screen, I realized it was a battle or war game and I fell in love with it. The next day I met with the game shop owner and told him about the game and why no one understood what it was but it was a great game for me.

After a few days, I was in a book shop and saw “DUNE” on the cover of a book and thought it can’t be the same dune or it can’t be related to that awesome game. After reading the back cover I knew the game and the book are connected so I bought it. And started reading it as soon I was home.

My young mind had no idea what I was getting into because it really expands your mind. Some words may confuse you at the start but you’ll get the meaning or explanation from the context or in later pages. The hype is real and this book is true to the word of so many people who read it. It is long but without any fillers. From start to finish it's nonstop movement and something is always happening. I did not use the words “nonstop action” because action and a well-paced story are not the same things.

I already read a lot of Star Wars and many other science fiction books before this book but this book was clearly the granddaddy of all these space sagas; the same as the dune game is the granddaddy of all RTS games.

Mr. Frank Herbert used his knowledge of the deserts in this book so amazingly that when I traveled to the “desert” countries (United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, etc…) and saw how these countries transformed into “oasis,” it made me realize how accurate he was and how possible it is to transform a desert planet like arracks into an oasis. I recommend this book to every science fiction lover and even politics-related book lover because it has both and much much more.

The new DUNE movie is coming soon, starring Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, and many more.

From the back cover:

“Frank Herbert’s classic masterpiece—a triumph of the imagination and one of the bestselling science fiction novels of all time.

Set on the desert planet Arracks, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, heir to a noble family tasked with ruling an inhospitable world where the only thing of value is the “spice” melange, a drug capable of extending life and enhancing consciousness. Coveted across the known universe, melange is a prize worth killing for....

When House Atreides is betrayed, the destruction of Paul’s family will set the boy on a journey toward a destiny greater than he could ever have imagined. And as he evolves into the mysterious man known as Muad’Dib, he will bring to fruition humankind’s most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.”
