Once again, one of the spookiest books I've ever read, and one of the top five contenders for the scariest novels I've ever read. True, I've read scarier stories, but the way this one gets under your skin is a testament to the author Mr. James Herbert’s excellent writing.

The beginning was a little slow, but you're just getting a tour of the place, and the way everything is described is incredible. Later on, you'll understand why everything was basically coded into your brain, and you'll appreciate the slow start, but at the time, you'll be looking for places to hide or, in many cases, attempting to stop reading to look around with Goosebumps all over your body.

Crickley Hall is the name of a mansion that contains everything a haunted house story can offer. The third half of the novel picks up speed, and the ending feels rushed, but I believe this was just the way things unfolded, and it was not intentional. That is, in a nutshell, what the story demanded.

The family that comes to live in this house was a good family who had something tragic happens to them, and that thing will unfold with the story and become intertwined with what is going on in this house.

As with lots of good stories I think it is impossible to tell more about the novel because it will ruin the fun out of reading so just read the book and be scared.

This book was made into a television series, but I've never seen it, so I can't comment on whether it was good or not. Please share your thoughts with us if you've seen the movie and read the book. I'm too busy to watch TV shows or movies right now, but if I do, I'll post my thoughts here, so keep an eye on this page.

Warning: I think its best if you don't start the last half of the book too close to bedtime because I know you won't be able to put it down until it's finished.

Synopsis:

“The Secret of Crickley Hall is James Herbert’s number one bestseller. It explores the darker, more obtuse territories of evil and the supernatural. With brooding menace and rising tension, he masterfully and relentlessly draws the reader through to the ultimate revelation – one that will stay to chill the mind long after the book has been laid aside.

The Caleighs have had a terrible year . . . They need time and space, while they await the news they dread. Gabe has brought his wife, Eve, and daughters, Loren and Cally, down to Devon, to the peaceful seaside village of Hollow Bay. Perhaps here they can try, as a family, to come to terms with what’s happened to them . . .

Crickley Hall is an unusually large house on the outskirts of the village at the bottom of Devil's Cleave, a massive tree-lined gorge – the stuff of local legend. It's perfect for them, if a bit gloomy. And Chester, their dog, seems really spooked at being away from home. And old houses do make sounds. And it's constantly cold. And even though they shut the cellar door every night, it’s always open again in morning . . .”

The Amityville Horror

It's one of the scariest books I've ever read. The book is said to be based on the Lutz family's paranormal experiences, but it has sparked controversy over its factual accuracy.

This is one of my all-time favorite horror books, and I challenge anyone to read it alone in a house that looks and feels exactly like the one described in the book. I know some readers, like myself, can do it, but not everyone can, and I'm sure many readers will stop reading before they get to the middle of the book. Only two books come close in terms of terror, one is "The Secret of Crickley Hall" and I can't recall the title of second right now. (As soon as I confirm the name, I'll add the name and review.) The reason I said readers like me can read it is that we have become immune to the horror as a result of our constant exposure to it.

Much of what has been said about this house is true, and one of the real individuals involved died in prison in March 2021. I'm not sure if everything was true, but reading about real people who died as a result of their involvement with this house and the manner in which they died is a little creepy.

Although both adaptations, the original and remake of the book are entertaining, I believe the book comes out on top when it comes to injecting liquid ice into your body and making your hair stand on end. However, you can watch the movies and read the book in any order you want. Both the original and remake versions were different, but they both perfectly captured the book's creepy and scary elements.

The only issue I had with this book was the way the author lengthened it by including details that were not necessary in my opinion, but this could be due to his writing style. Aside from that, it's a fantastically chilling and entertaining read.

Synopsis:

“A fascinating and frightening book” (Los Angeles Times)—the bestselling true story about a house possessed by evil spirits, haunted by psychic phenomena almost too terrible to describe.

In December 1975, the Lutz family moved into their new home on suburban Long Island. George and Kathleen Lutz knew that, one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers, and sisters in the house, but the property—complete with boathouse and swimming pool—and the price had been too good to pass up.

Twenty-eight days later, the entire Lutz family fled in terror.

This is the spellbinding, shocking true story that gripped the nation about an American dream that turned into a nightmare beyond imagining—“this book will scare the hell out of you” (Kansas City Star).”

A Head Full of Ghosts

Published: 2, June 2015

Author: Paul Tremblay

Genres: Fiction, Horror Fiction, Horror, Literature, Psychological Fiction, Suspense, Thrillers, U.S. Horror Fiction

Check the summary of this book here:

A spooky, strange, and perplexing book. Throughout the tale, and even at the end, the author leaves the reader with numerous unanswered questions. In this work, the reader's perception of events is crucial, so I recommend reading it with an open mind so you can appreciate it more.

This month, I'm just reviewing horror literature, as I've planned for quite some time. Today is October 4th, and this is my fourth horror novel review of the month.

Stephen King stated that he was terrified when he read this book, therefore I had to get it. Yes, it was frightening, and certain pages would make your skin crawl, but what scared me the most were the individuals drowning in mental illness and the close family members who were suffering alongside them.

Depression, paranoia, Schizophrenia, and hypersensitivity are all prominent themes in this terrifying tale, which is further enhanced by possession, demons, and exorcism. This is a novel that will make you jittery. Every time you enter a room or any lonely or gloomy location, it may cause you to look around and swivel your head backward to see behind you. Simply put, it will terrify you and will continue to scare you for a long time.

Okay, the plot twist was one thing that could have ruined this book for many readers, which is why it received low points and a low recommendation. However, I believe that a reader should give it a chance to determine whether it was good or not. It's a little slow-paced, with some plot-related details purposefully but deftly left out in order to avoid revealing the truth that would clear up the situations surrounding the twist and ending.

Oh, and contrary to its name, it has nothing to do with ghosts. In my opinion, ghosts are a metaphor for issues relating to past mental states and memories, and reading about these memories and mental states can make the reader feel as if they have seen or read about a ghost.

Synopsis:

“WINNER OF THE 2015 BRAM STOKER AWARD FOR SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN A NOVEL

A chilling thriller that brilliantly blends psychological suspense and supernatural horror, reminiscent of Stephen King's The Shining, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, and William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist.

The lives of the Barretts, a normal suburban New England family, are torn apart when fourteen-year-old Marjorie begins to display signs of acute schizophrenia.

To her parents’ despair, the doctors are unable to stop Marjorie’s descent into madness. As their stable home devolves into a house of horrors, they reluctantly turn to a local Catholic priest for help. Father Wanderly suggests an exorcism; he believes the vulnerable teenager is the victim of demonic possession. He also contacts a production company that is eager to document the Barretts’ plight. With John, Marjorie’s father, out of work for more than a year and the medical bills looming, the family agrees to be filmed, and soon find themselves the unwitting stars of The Possession, a hit reality television show. When events in the Barrett household explode in tragedy, the show and the shocking incidents it captures become the stuff of urban legend.

Fifteen years later, a bestselling writer interviews Marjorie’s younger sister, Merry. As she recalls those long ago events that took place when she was just eight years old, long-buried secrets and painful memories that clash with what was broadcast on television begin to surface—and a mind-bending tale of psychological horror is unleashed, raising vexing questions about memory and reality, science and religion, and the very nature of evil.”
