A Darker Shade of Magic

Published: 24, February 2015
Book 1 of 3: Shades of Magic

Author: V. E. Schwab

Genres: Action, Adult Fantasy, Adventure, Alternate History, Fantasy, Gaslamp Fantasy, Historical Fantasy, Science Fiction

This book is a mix of magic, interdimensional travel, strong female characters, criminal activity, a little romance, and four Londons set in four different dimensions. The author came up with one of the most original series ideas and executed it flawlessly.

This is an adult fantasy novel with so many amazing things to read about that I had to ask myself several times during the first read what parts of the book I enjoyed the most? In fact, the concept as a whole was quite unique. The four Londons that the protagonist can visit are White London, Red London, Black London, and Grey London. Whether they embrace it, worship it, kill for it, or don't believe in it, each London has a unique relationship with magic. Only major characters are able to travel between the Londons, implying that they are messengers and ambassadors for the rulers and this comes with some difficult challenges.

Another thing I liked was the main characters' collaboration, and the romance felt natural and not forced on the reader just to attract romance fans. I discovered relationships that aren't just between a girl and a boy and the like; in fact, I was impressed by the author's treatment of brotherly relationships and the relationships we have with people who aren't family but still we treat them like family.

In this book, I found a question that was partially answered, namely, what would you do if you had the power to do evil at a great magnitude, would you do it or would you control yourself? If you are not an evil person, it will be a test of your willpower as well as a self-discovery experience.

A few things were a little off, which wasn't a problem for me, but I felt compelled to inform the new readers. One thing I wanted more of was detail, which this book lacked.

The main female character may also offend some readers because, in order to portray her as a super tough woman, the author has almost turned her into a man who requires no assistance and, in particular, does not require the presence of a man in her life. I understand that it could be any woman we know, which is why I am fine with it, but it is not for everyone.

The dialogue was a little clichéd, but it was still a fun read, and I enjoyed it so much that I read all three books in the series and plan to read all of the author's books.

I believe a film adaptation of the series is in the works, but nothing has been heard about it since 2019. Keep an eye on this section because I'll post an update as soon as I find any new information on the subject.

Synopsis:

“A Darker Shade of Magic, from #1 New York Times bestselling author V.E. Schwab

Kell is one of the last Antari―magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.

Kell was raised in Arnes―Red London―and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.

Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.

"A Darker Shade of Magic has all the hallmarks of a classic work of fantasy. Schwab has given us a gem of a tale...This is a book to treasure."―Deborah Harkeness, New York Times bestselling author of the All Souls trilogy

Beautiful World, Where Are You

Published: 7, September 2021

Author: Sally Rooney

Genres: British & Irish Literary Fiction, Coming Of Age, Contemporary, Fiction, Friendship Fiction, Literature, Women's Fiction, Women's Friendship Fiction

Themes such as relationships, friendships, and growing up are explored in this novel through conversations between characters about their personal lives. This book, on the other hand, is extremely readable and immediately draws you in. While I was drawn to these flawed characters, I also found myself judging them and didn't always understand why they did what they did.

I think the plot was mediocre, but who cares if you are a fan of the author. I had a difficult time reading the book, but I did my best and plan to read more books by the author because I am a book reviewer who enjoys reading a wide variety of books. Still, I don't think these books are for everyone unless you're a fan or want to try new authors and genres.

As in her first two books, the focus is on the women, and the narrative is centered on the push and pull of their relationships. In some ways, the relationships in this book resemble those in her previous works, but they are not exact replicas. Meanwhile, the book is peppered with brief discussions of political philosophy, art, and other strong topics.

The main characters communicate through letters, which is a very clever way to make a story work. I thought the author's idea was brilliant, and it makes me want to read more of her books to see how she handles the story if she doesn't use this clever trick.

Another clever aspect of this author's writing style that I discovered is the way she uses the readers' personal lives and experiences to entice them to read more of these stories. Basically, she grabs the readers' heartstrings and pulls them into her world of one-sided or forced relationships that we read to see if they will or will not work out.

Anyway, all of this taught me that she is not a bad writer and that she is actually quite clever and matures with each new book she releases, which is a very good sign, not only for her fans but also for all other readers. I'm looking forward to her next book just to see how far she's progressed and what new clever technique she employs to attract new fans.

Yours Cruelly, Elvira

Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark

Published: 21, September 2021

Author: Cassandra Peterson

Genres: Arts, Comedy, Fantasy, Horror, Humor, Movies & Video, Photography, Science Fiction, Television

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the undisputed Queen of Halloween, reveals her entire story, complete with intimate bombshells, as told by the bombshell herself.

This is one of the best celebrity memoirs of all time, and it's about the woman who played Elvira, one of my favorite female characters, and she's only second to Morticia Addams as my favorite female character ever.

I loved the character she played but I had no idea about her writing skills and that is what blew me away. She is brilliant and she has many stories to tell. I was smiling and sometimes I was serious but overall I felt joy and happiness. Pages just moved between my fingers and the book was finished as if it was just a booklet even though it has almost four hundred pages and then I read it again in just two days. After that I watched some footage of Elvira to satisfy the urge to see her again and re-live the beautiful moments, I even watched her interviews on YouTube.

The writing style is as if you are sitting with the author in the same room and she is telling you about her life and she is really open about everything same as Elvira. So get ready for an amazing time with a person who is like an open book when it comes to her life and anyone who is involved in it.

You are going to find a lot of surprises and read about many megastars that had interaction with the author, some of this is going to shock you and make you see the smoke and mirrors of the place called Hollywood.

The audio of this book is amazing because it is narrated by Cassandra Peterson herself and that makes it even better. I recommend getting the audio with the book if you still don’t have the audible account because you can get the audio version for free with the free audible trial.

Synopsis:

“The woman behind the icon known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the undisputed Queen of Halloween, reveals her full story, filled with intimate bombshells, told by the bombshell herself.

On Good Friday in 1953, at only 18 months old, 25 miles from the nearest hospital in Manhattan, Kansas, Cassandra Peterson reached for a pot on the stove and doused herself in boiling water. Third-degree burns covered 35% of her body, and the prognosis wasn't good. But she survived. Burned and scarred, the impact stayed with her and became an obstacle she was determined to overcome. Feeling like a misfit led to her love of horror. While her sisters played with Barbie dolls, Cassandra built model kits of Frankenstein and Dracula, and idolized Vincent Price.

Due to a complicated relationship with her mother, Cassandra left home at 14, and by age 17 she was performing at the famed Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas. Run-ins with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Tom Jones helped her grow up fast. Then a chance encounter with her idol Elvis Presley, changed the course of her life forever, and led her to Europe where she worked in film and traveled Italy as lead singer of an Italian pop band. She eventually made her way to Los Angeles, where she joined the famed comedy improv group, The Groundlings, and worked alongside Phil Hartman and Paul "Pee-wee" Reubens, honing her comedic skills.

Nearing age 30, a struggling actress considered past her prime, she auditioned at local LA channel KHJ as hostess for the late night vintage horror movies. Cassandra improvised, made the role her own, and got the job on the spot. Yours Cruelly, Elvira is an unforgettably wild memoir. Cassandra doesn't shy away from revealing exactly who she is and how she overcame seemingly insurmountable odds. Always original and sometimes outrageous, her story is loaded with twists, travails, revelry, and downright shocking experiences. It is the candid, often funny, and sometimes heart-breaking tale of a Midwest farm girl's long strange trip to become the world's sexiest, sassiest Halloween icon.”
