A Conjuring of Light

Published: 21, February 2017
Book 3 of 3: Shades of Magic

Author: V. E. Schwab

Genres: Action, Adult Fantasy, Adventure, Alternate History, Fantasy, Gaslamp Fantasy, Historical Fantasy, Magic, Science Fiction

The third and final book in the adult fantasy series "Shades of Magic," is a fantastic conclusion to the trilogy in which a fallen hero rises to defeat an ancient foe.

It's a lengthy book, but not as long as I wanted it to be because I wanted to learn more about these characters, despite the fact that there's a lot of action in it and the author does a fantastic job of describing it all in epic detail.

Because the authors are not able to tie all of the knots together, many fantasy trilogies disappoint at the end or end in a heap of rushed sputtering farce. That isn't the case with this book. It is an outstanding and well-rounded novel that is without a doubt the best in the series. But remember, this is the third part; if you haven't read the first two parts, nothing will make sense.

This book will make you feel the pain of losing something you care about, such as a close friend, a pet, or any other thing or person you are no longer able to meet or see. By the end of the book, the characters will remind you of this painful feeling, and I'm sure some readers will cry. Surprisingly, this book series made readers dislike it, but on the other hand, it was able to squeeze the heart to make it bleed tears out of the reader’s eyes, which is a sign of great writing, world-building, and character development.

I'm sure some people will despise this book, but it's not because of the author or the plot; it's because of the characters, which are purposefully written in this manner. I'm not sure why some people don't get it. Yes, I dislike many characters, but that does not mean I despise the book or the authors.

A Gathering of Shadows

Published: 23, February 2016
Book 2 of 3: Shades of Magic

Author: V. E. Schwab

Genres: Action, Adult Fantasy, Adventure, Alternate History, Fantasy, Gaslamp Fantasy, Historical Fantasy, Science Fiction

The story in this book picks up four months after the events of the first book, and all of our favorite characters are dealing with the fallout from that epic conclusion.

One of the characters has realized a dream, but others have not been so fortunate. Additionally, a new character is introduced, and I am sure many readers will enjoy him because he is a pirate, but not just any pirate; he is what we all love to read and imagine in a pirate.

The main female character will almost certainly be despised once more, and I felt the same way this time, but that is what the author intended; otherwise, there would be no plot twists, sufferings, endings, or beginnings to many things in the story.

This book started off slowly and wasn't as fast-paced as the first, but as it progressed, it became epic, which was one of the reasons I liked it even more. A plot and story about a magic tournament will take up a lot of pages. Consider it a high-powered magic tournament.

The main plot was a little dragged out, but I believe this was done to help readers get to know the main characters better and, in many cases, to make them hate a few characters even more while sympathizing with others. In my opinion, it was best for an open-minded reader.

The final scenes were epic, but some of the things said by the main female character made me hate her even more. I can only say one thing about this hatred, and that is my personal experience dealing with people who are actually the cause of our problem, but who say the same thing once the problem they created is solved. Simply read the book and comment on the feelings I'm describing.

The book is good and I am not going to give it low points just because I hated a character.

“From #1 New York Times bestselling author V.E. Schwab

"Addictive and immersive, A Gathering of Shadows cements this series as a must-read." ―Entertainment Weekly, grade A

Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift, and into Black London.

In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games-an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries-a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again-and so to keep magic's balance, another London must fall...in V.E. Schwab's A Gathering of Shadows.

A Darker Shade of Magic

Published: 24, February 2015
Book 1 of 3: Shades of Magic

Author: V. E. Schwab

Genres: Action, Adult Fantasy, Adventure, Alternate History, Fantasy, Gaslamp Fantasy, Historical Fantasy, Science Fiction

This book is a mix of magic, interdimensional travel, strong female characters, criminal activity, a little romance, and four Londons set in four different dimensions. The author came up with one of the most original series ideas and executed it flawlessly.

This is an adult fantasy novel with so many amazing things to read about that I had to ask myself several times during the first read what parts of the book I enjoyed the most? In fact, the concept as a whole was quite unique. The four Londons that the protagonist can visit are White London, Red London, Black London, and Grey London. Whether they embrace it, worship it, kill for it, or don't believe in it, each London has a unique relationship with magic. Only major characters are able to travel between the Londons, implying that they are messengers and ambassadors for the rulers and this comes with some difficult challenges.

Another thing I liked was the main characters' collaboration, and the romance felt natural and not forced on the reader just to attract romance fans. I discovered relationships that aren't just between a girl and a boy and the like; in fact, I was impressed by the author's treatment of brotherly relationships and the relationships we have with people who aren't family but still we treat them like family.

In this book, I found a question that was partially answered, namely, what would you do if you had the power to do evil at a great magnitude, would you do it or would you control yourself? If you are not an evil person, it will be a test of your willpower as well as a self-discovery experience.

A few things were a little off, which wasn't a problem for me, but I felt compelled to inform the new readers. One thing I wanted more of was detail, which this book lacked.

The main female character may also offend some readers because, in order to portray her as a super tough woman, the author has almost turned her into a man who requires no assistance and, in particular, does not require the presence of a man in her life. I understand that it could be any woman we know, which is why I am fine with it, but it is not for everyone.

The dialogue was a little clichéd, but it was still a fun read, and I enjoyed it so much that I read all three books in the series and plan to read all of the author's books.

I believe a film adaptation of the series is in the works, but nothing has been heard about it since 2019. Keep an eye on this section because I'll post an update as soon as I find any new information on the subject.

Synopsis:

“A Darker Shade of Magic, from #1 New York Times bestselling author V.E. Schwab

Kell is one of the last Antari―magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.

Kell was raised in Arnes―Red London―and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.

Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.

"A Darker Shade of Magic has all the hallmarks of a classic work of fantasy. Schwab has given us a gem of a tale...This is a book to treasure."―Deborah Harkeness, New York Times bestselling author of the All Souls trilogy
