Friday The 13th

Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th
Published: 2006
Author: Peter M. Bracke
Genres: History, Criticism, Horror, Movie Guides, Fantasy, Video Reference, TV & Movie Tie-In, Biography

One of my favorite combinations of day and date is coming and it means time to review a book related to “Friday The 13” and a bit about the movies with the same name.

One of my all-time favorite Characters is Jason Voorhees who needs no introduction if you are a fan of horror/slasher movies. I watched all these movies and bought all the comics, magazines, books, and even comedy if I saw Jason’s famous hockey mask on the cover. You can find many copies and copycats of Jason but he is always going to be the number one slasher.

Crystal Lake Memories is a visual memoir of these movies. Illustrated with nearly 600 photos, archives, and production materials. An amazing read if you are a fan of the series and it can be a great companion for the movie series collection that I mentioned near the end of this review or you can directly check it here. https://amzn.to/3jRI2i6

The hardcover version’s dimensions are as follows 9.5 x 1.11 x 12.4 inches and it is a treasure trove of behind the scenes info and tells the reader about how all and movies were made with all the detail and trivia, full of never before seen photos and interviews with the cast members. You can read this book and then watch the movies again to see missing things and find special places and parts that you never realized before.

After reading the book you gain an even greater appreciation of one of the greatest horror movie franchises in history while watching it again. If you are a fan of this franchise then I don’t have to tell you much about this part of the book.

This book is not just a story of this franchise. You are going to learn a lot about the cinema industry and how they can ruin a good franchise or a movie even before it is released or sometimes not even finished filming. Show business is not what people think of it and you may find many insights about this topic here.

Synopsis 1:
“'Friday the 13th' introduced moviegoers to a new kind of cinematic terror - shocking, visceral, and graphic. Spawning ten sequels, the series has become the most successful horror franchise. Illustrated with nearly 600 photos, archives, and production materials, this volume is a visual memoir of the series.”

Synopsis 2:
“For the past 30 years, cinematic icon Jason Voorhees has terrified audiences around the world, his long-running exploits spanning 11 films and generating over $600 million in box office receipts. Now, for the first time and in their own words, over 200 alumni of the series recall three decades of behind-the-scenes stories, struggles, controversies, and calamities. This Standard Text Edition has been fully revised and expanded upon the original hardcover print edition with new interviews and text material. Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th is the ultimate oral memoir of the most successful horror franchise in the history of motion pictures.”

Billy Summers

Published: 3, August 2021
Author: Stephen King
Genres: Crime, Thriller, Suspense, Action, Fiction, War, Military, Assassination, Mystery

At last, the wait is over and I was able to read this book. I was waiting for this one from April 2020 when Mr. Stephen King mentioned about writing this book in an interview and he mentioned that it is a crime novel about a hired assassin while talking to another great writer Mr. John Grisham.

This book has all you want in a book from a legendary author like The King. The story is about revenge, justice, fate, luck, love, war, and a complex hero with one last shot at redemption. The subject is kind of the same as many of these stories, about good guys doing jobs that are not what their heart wants to do, and they want out, but a twist is waiting for them at the final moment when they think it is the last job before they can be free of doing what they never wanted to do.

This book may feel like two different books once the slow pace of the first half shifts into the fast-paced action in the second half of the book. Don’t worry, it is slow at the start for a reason and I am sure it is going to make the second half even more interesting and you are going to feel for the main characters because of that slow start but the ending is surely going to make you forget if this book was ever slow. The book has more than five hundred pages but it is still a good page-turner.

One thing that I loved was the amount of Easter eggs that the author added from his previous books. Don’t forget to mention in comments about your thoughts and how many of these Easter eggs you found.

Keep in mind this book is not what you are used to reading by this writer but some parts may disturb you, especially the war crimes and stuff like that. It is not openly discussed but still, it may make some readers feel disturbed.

One thing is for sure as it was mentioned in the synopsis, and that is: You won’t put this story down, and you won’t forget Billy.

Synopsis:
“From legendary storyteller and #1 bestseller Stephen King, whose “restless imagination is a power that cannot be contained” (The New York Times Book Review), comes a thrilling new novel about a good guy in a bad job.

Billy Summers is a man in a room with a gun. He’s a killer for hire and the best in the business. But he’ll do the job only if the target is a truly bad guy. And now Billy wants out. But first there is one last hit. Billy is among the best snipers in the world, a decorated Iraq war vet, a Houdini when it comes to vanishing after the job is done. So what could possibly go wrong?

How about everything.

This spectacular can’t-put-it-down novel is part war story, part love letter to small town America and the people who live there, and it features one of the most compelling and surprising duos in King fiction, who set out to avenge the crimes of an extraordinarily evil man. It’s about love, luck, fate, and a complex hero with one last shot at redemption.

You won’t put this story down, and you won’t forget Billy.”

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

Originally Published: 1986
Author: Frank Miller
Genres: Dystopian, DC Comics, Graphic Novels, Mystery, Super Hero, Batman, Superman, Robin, Joker

This comic was published as a four-part miniseries. The main series was called Batman: The Dark Knight and every issue had a different subtitle.

But later, when the series was collected into a single volume, the title of the first issue was applied to the entire series; The Dark Knight Returns.

I don’t care what anyone says but this is the greatest comic book ever written and no doubt one of the best comic art about batman. The story is set in an alternate timeline on earth-31. The dialogue, the fights, the brutality, the courage, and the way batman shows what he can do at the age of 55 is so amazing. I read it, I reread it, I watched it and I watched it many, many times, and still planning to watch the animated version again.

The fight between Batman and Mutant leader is one of the greatest fights of Batman, even the fight between Batman and Superman is nothing compared to this one. You really need to watch the animated version also to feel what I am feeling at the moment; I want to go and start punching the walls to satisfy the urges that I am having while writing about that particular part of the comic. The reason Batman did what he did was what this world needs at the moment.

The Dark Knight Returns is one of the most influential Batman stories ever published and it helped reintroduce a darker and more mature-oriented version of Batman in pop culture. Various elements of the series have since been incorporated in other aspects of Batman media and many other comics and even movies tried to use this style and way of storytelling.

Lots of times I read about people joking about batman and his fans. I think they don’t understand the concept of batman. It is not the plot armor or fan boys/gals who want to see batman win or it’s not that Batman is going to win every fight. The reason batman is what he is and why he is the greatest hero and champion of his fans is that; HE IS A HUMAN and that is relatable.

Yes, he is a human who is willing to fight till the end even he has to fight a god for a cause, and what is his cause? To save humanity and to be on the correct path. He is not a hero, he is an idea and gives hope that anyone can be batman, we all can be batman and I think this comic is a perfect way to understand this.

Synopsis:
“Writer/artist Frank Miller completely reinvents the legend of Batman in this saga of a near-future Gotham City gone to rot, 10 years after the Dark Knight’s retirement. Forced to take action, the Dark Knight returns in a blaze of fury, taking on a whole new generation of criminals and matching their level of violence. He is soon joined by a new Robin—a girl named Carrie Kelley, who proves to be just as invaluable as her predecessors.

Can Batman and Robin deal with the threat posed by their deadliest enemies, after years of incarceration have turned them into perfect psychopaths? And more important, can anyone survive the coming fallout from an undeclared war between the superpowers—or the clash of what were once the world’s greatest heroes?

Hailed as a comics masterpiece, The Dark Knight Returns is Frank Miller’s (300 and Sin City) reinvention of Gotham’s legendary protector. It remains one of the most influential stories ever told in comics, with its echoes felt in all media forms of DC’s storytelling. Collects issues #1-4.”
