The Eight

Published: 1997
Cover version that I have.
Series: 1 of 2 (2nd book is called The Fire)

Genres: Technothrillers, Conspiracy Thrillers, Historical Thrillers, Quest, Adventure

The first thing you notice is the amount of detail and research that was put into writing this novel by the writer. I think she loves to research as a hobby and finds facts to fascinate herself, and now she is doing the same with the readers of her books. She took all the facts and knowledge and then mixed it up with complex characters and two different lifetimes in different eras of our world that spans over two hundred years.

I enjoyed it because I knew it was not just about chess, as its cover or name suggests. It is about everything the word eight represents, and that is infinity and the universe. The facts will surely blow your mind, and everything around you will start to feel new, and the meaning behind many things will open up to you.

I know, if hundred people gave five stars to this book, one is surely going to give one star, but the reason is not that it is boring or long, it’s in the taste of those people, not everyone likes everything even it is perfect.

This story is going to grip you and will not let you go till you are finished with it. I dare you to start the book and then see if you can sleep without thinking about it until you end it. I recommend you read it without giving a big gap between the reading sessions like more than a week because if you do, chances are you may have to restart the book because of the size and complexity of the book. But don’t worry, I know few people who read this book more than once because it is so amazing.

Adventure and action are great with historical location and characters from real life but I can’t go into detail as always, because of spreading the spoilers.

From the back cover:
“New York City, 1972—A dabbler in mathematics and chess, Catherine Velis is also a computer expert for a Big Eight accounting firm. Before heading off to a new assignment in Algeria, Cat has her palm read by a fortune-teller. The woman warns Cat of danger. Then an antique dealer approaches Cat with a mysterious offer: He has an anonymous client who is trying to collect the pieces of an ancient chess service, purported to be in Algeria. If Cat can bring the pieces back, there will be a generous reward.

The South of France, 1790—Mireille de Remy and her cousin Valentine are young novices at the fortress like Montglane Abbey. With France aflame in revolution, the two girls burn to rebel against constricted convent life—and their means of escape is at hand. Buried deep within the abbey are pieces of the Montglane Chess Service, once owned by Charlemagne. Whoever reassembles the pieces can play a game of unlimited power. But to keep the Game a secret from those who would abuse it, the two young women must scatter the pieces throughout the world. . . .”

I want to give 100/100 but this book may be too much for some new or slow readers because it is very long and full of back stories and knowledge that may feel boring to the people who are not interested in real-life facts. Otherwise, it is one of the greatest first books by any writer.

IMPROBABLE

Published: 2006
Author: Adam Fawer

Genres: Espionage, Espionage Thrillers, Contemporary Literature, Fiction, Suspense, Thriller, Suspense Thriller, Science Fiction, Action, Adventure

This is the first book by Mr. Adam Fawer but it doesn't feel like it, because he was very successful in creating a great story with nonstop action on every page, and you can't stop reading till you are on the last page. So much suspense and action; I don't know why this book is not a movie until now. (If it is, then someone, please tell me.)

One movie that has a hint of this kind of book is "NEXT" starring Nicolas Cage but still it is nothing to compare with the book and its idea and story.

Sometimes I felt like reading a different version of Clive Cussler in terms of all the adrenalin-filled pages that make you turn page after page and leaves you breathless.

AND.

This book has nothing to do with Katherine Neville's The Eight but I was constantly thinking of it while reading this book because both are thoroughly researched and both writers used real-world knowledge and facts in writing fiction. The only thing that was kind of hard was to read the first few pages at the start of this book and I thought I will stop at the end of the seventh page because that is what I do, I always read the first seven pages of any given book to time myself, so I can tell the average time it will take to finish that book. I need to do it because I read many books at once and depending on the time it takes to finish a book and quality decides which book I will finish first, or last, or never...

Moving on...It was my great luck that I decided to continue after reaching the seventh page because I was already stuck into finding out what is going to happen next to the guy I was reading about and I was treated to one of the ten greatest story ideas that I ever read.

I will not tell anything except; it is about the idea and concept of probabilities, quantum theories, and realities. This book makes you think and gives you chills when you realize whatever you are reading can be true and maybe is true…

I don’t know if all the covers are the same and if you will get the same cover as I received; it was actually a moving cover. At first glance, it is just like any spy book or movie cover, but when I held the book in my hand; it moved. It was a 3D cover. It was an innovative idea to add a 3D cover to a book from a new writer but I liked it.

From the back cover:
“David Caine inhabits a world of obsession, rich rewards, and rapid, destructive downfalls. A compulsive gambler and a brilliant mathematician prone to crippling epileptic seizures, he possesses the uncanny ability to calculate the odds of any hand in the blink of an eye. But one night at an underground poker club, Caine makes a costly miscalculation, sending his life spinning out of control. Desperate, he agrees to test an experimental drug with unnerving side effects: inexplicable visions of the past, present, and future. Unsure whether he's perceiving an alternate reality or suffering a psychotic breakdown, Caine embarks on a journey that stretches beyond the possible into the world of the improbable. Gradually, he discovers the extent of his astonishing new ability -- but powerful, shadowy forces know Caine's secret. Now Caine must fight for his survival -- and his sanity . . .”

A Non-Fiction Writing Machine

Published: July 31, 2013

Genres: Business Writing Skills, writing skills, Authorship, Self Help, how to

A Non-Fiction Writing Machine How to Write a Book in 5 1/2 Days in 3 SIMPLE Steps - A rather long title for a short book, but it is enough to make you into a writing machine for sure. I was searching for books online and saw this title, and decided to read it because of its not so large size and my goals related to writing books. I can say it is going to help a new writer or someone who is stuck at what to do with writing goals. Just give this book a try and surely you'll learn a thing or two, even if you are already writing and publishing books.

Just keep in mind, the writer was very clear about the simple concepts that can increase your speed in completing the book but still, you are the one who is writing, so it won't actually take 5 1/2 days to finish unless you already have a complete story ready in your mind.

I feel it can help a lot of writers who never started a book because of fears and lack of knowledge about this industry. And I can safely say that this is one of the best simple books from the "how-to" genre related to book writing.

I suggest you stop whatever you are writing and read this book from start to finish and take notes of what you feel is lacking from your writing and anything else that you missed in your previous publication adventures.

The only thing that I think is wrong about this book is the title because this book not just helps non-fiction; it can help fiction and any other genre of book writers who are lucky enough to read this book.
