The Review:

This was a terrifying story that made me wonder what new terrors awaited me around the corner, and it was well worth the effort to find out what they were. It's the first installment in the World's Scariest Tales series, and it's based on "true" legends from around the globe. More characters and backstories are revealed as the story progresses, as are the horrors of the past and those who have returned to the present. I admire this author's work; if you read one of his books, you will not be disappointed.

People compare this author to Stephen King, but I must clarify that he is not Stephen King, but he can write well in his own style, create complex characters, and is fantastic at world-building.

The story may seem slow to action-oriented readers, but what is happening is that you are being introduced to the characters and receiving minute-by-minute commentary from them as they progress. The beginning is fast but slows down, then it picks up speed again until you reach the amazing ending, and I believe many readers will be divided as to whether it was great or not. But it was incredible for me.

Finally, I must admit that it was a little disappointing, and I'm not sure why. Maybe I was expecting too much, or the never-ending talks made it a little slower for my taste because I don't like fillers in anything just to make it longer, but I can understand talks that are actually informative, and this book was filled with those talks, but I was still unhappy about some things. It's still a fantastic read, but don't go in with high hopes or you'll be disappointed.

If you just start reading without thinking about who wrote it and wait for a "loud bang at the door," you'll be in a fast-paced survival situation, which is exactly what I look for in a book like this. Why not give it a shot? The book is only about 300 pages long and is a quick read.

Synopsis:

“If you've ever been in a remote area when something terrible goes wrong, then you know the fear of utter helplessness. Mosquito Man nails this. A superbly crafted psychological thriller." (New York Journal of Books)

From USA Today and number-one Amazon best-selling author Jeremy Bates comes the first book in the all-new World's Scariest Legends series.

After a woman bangs at the door in the middle of the night and promptly dies from her injury, a couple's remote cabin getaway becomes a psychological night of terror as they are hunted by an unknown assailant. Now they must go far beyond what they thought themselves capable of if they hope to save their young children and survive until morning.”
