Biography:
Mary Shelley was a writer who led a literary life. Her father pushed her to learn to write by having her write letters, and she enjoyed creating stories as a youngster. Unfortunately, when Mary went off with Percy in 1814, all of her juvenilia were destroyed, and none of her surviving manuscripts can be positively dated before that year.
Mounseer Nongtongpaw, a collection of funny rhymes written for Godwin's Juvenile Library when she was ten and a half years old, is commonly considered to be her first published work; nevertheless, the poem is ascribed to another writer in the most current official compilation of her works. Mary Shelley's writing was warmly supported by Percy Shelley: "My husband was adamant from the start that I should live up to my parents' expectations and join the hall of fame. He was always encouraging me to establish a literary career."
